Ever wonder how popcorn and pickles became movie-night favorites?

POPCORN wasn’t always welcome in theaters! In the early 1900s, movie theaters were fancy, quiet places where snacks were banned. During the Great Depression, popcorn became a cheap treat sold outside theaters—and theater owners soon realized they were missing out. By the late 1930s, popcorn was making its way inside. WWII sugar rationing made candy harder to find, helping popcorn become the ultimate movie snack.

And then there are the PICKLES! In Texas, pickle snacking at theaters dates back decades, with large jars of pickles sitting at concession counters. Today, those jars have largely been replaced by individually wrapped pickle pouches.

THE BEST PART? Hot, buttery popcorn paired with a salty dill pickle is a tradition especially popular in Texas and parts of the South. Talk about a Texas movie-night classic!

So the next time you grab a bucket of popcorn or a pickle pouch at Downtown Movie Night, you’ll know there’s a little history behind the snacks! 🎬

DID YOU KNOW? 🎬

20 years ago, Downtown Movie Night kicked things off with a classic… Top Gun!

Our very first movie was shown in the parking lot on Twohig Avenue, right across from the Cactus Hotel. And just like that, a Downtown tradition was born! ❤️

20 years, countless movies, and so many memories later… we’re still bringing families and friends together under the stars.

As we close out Downtown Movie Night for the summer season, we’re grateful to celebrate 20 years of bringing our community together.

An extra special thank you to Kathie Whitworth of KCSA Radio for her incredible dedication and contributions to Downtown Movie Night and to our community. Kathie’s late husband, the founder of Downtown Movie Night, helped create something truly special, and her continued support has helped carry that tradition forward.

Twenty years of families, friends, laughter, memories and movies downtown. What a legacy. ❤️
