my top tips for keeping your designs evenly spaced ⬇️⬇️⬇️
🌸mark a guide on the bottom of your piece to space out the start of your design, I usually divide my pieces into 8 even parts
🌸work from the bottom up, build each row in a round before you move up
🌸use a marker that will burn away in the first firing to sketch out ideas, I don’t do this anymore but it is very helpful when you are starting out!
🌸practice practice practice!! I was drawing these designs for a long time before they ever made their way to a piece of pottery!

a more in depth look at the trimming process! after my piece is thrown on the wheel, I let it dry to a point that potters call leather hard. This dryness level allows for the bottom of the piece to be trimmed to an even thickness, and cleaned up! I always add a little foot to the bottom of my pieces. Trimming can be so satisfying when the clay is at the perfect consistency, the clay spirals are always satisfying to watch! Now this piece will be decorated before its first firing!
