Get ready for the July showcase: Monsters, Muses, and Myths! We have a great list of participating artists, all with a fantastic range of styles and mediums.

This exhibition explores the stories humanity has told across cultures and centuries to explain the unknown, confront fear, and give shape to wonder. Inspired by global myths, ancient lore, fairy tales, heroic epics, cryptids, and reimagined legends. From divine figures and tragic heroes to beasts, tricksters, and spirits, artists have interpreted these narratives through a contemporary lens.

This showcase will hang from June 30th - August 2nd with an artist reception on July 17th from 6-9PM.

JJ Snow () is an emerging Utah-based artist working primarily in painting and mixed media. Their work centers on q***r love, focusing on its softness, warmth, and everyday beauty.

Rather than approaching q***rness through struggle alone, Snow creates pieces that feel calm, intimate, and hopeful. Their work often highlights quiet moments of connection, inviting viewers to slow down and sit with feelings of peace, affection, and belonging.

Through both figurative and more atmospheric compositions, Snow explores what it means to see q***r love not just as resistance, but as something gentle, joyful, and worth celebrating.

This is the final week for SLC Q***r! If you haven't seen the showcase yet, come into the Urban Arts Gallery before it's over.

Are you ready for spooky season yet? Our exhibition "FREAK SHOW" will be this October's showcase theme.

So step right up! "Freak Show" invites artists into the strange, the uncanny, and the gloriously abnormal. Inspired by carnival sideshows, curiosities, oddities, and the macabre, this exhibition celebrates what exists outside the norm.

We are seeking work that embraces the unusual, the creepy, the grotesque, and the fantastical. Think distorted forms, surreal characters, dark humor, exaggerated bodies, eerie narratives, and visual spectacles that feel both alluring and unsettling. Whether your work whispers unease or screams spectacle, "Freak Show" is a space for art that refuses to behave.

Freak Show challenges viewers to confront what they fear, desire, or don’t fully understand. This exhibition invites you to revel in the strange, honor the outsider, and celebrate the art of being unapologetically different.

Artists of all backgrounds and experience levels are encouraged to apply.
***Utah residents only!***

The Deadline to Submit is August 31st, 2026, all artists will be notified by September 5th, 2026.

This show will hang from September 29th to November 1st, 2026. With a Gallery Reception on October 16th from 6-9 pm.

Jason Hanson () is another participant in the Urban Arts Gallery's SLC Q***r showcase. Hanson has been an active artist with the gallery, participating in the Connect Program, hosting Grow: A Critique Group for Artists every month, and is one of contracted boutique artists.

"I break apart and rebuild the natural world through grit, texture, and vibrant color. The Wasatch Mountains, seen daily from my studio and wandered on long hikes, live inside the work. Each painting carries memory while remaining open to personal interpretation. I’m drawn to landscapes that feel both intimate and distant." - Jason Hanson

Jason’s work explores the liminal space between the unseen world and waking life, making the unseen seen and celebrated. When they translate the unseen world into life, the work reliably contains messages for someone ready to find it. Pushing the societal boundaries that condition and bind us, Jason invites us to accept our whole selves by lifting up the parts of us that we reject, deny, and hide from one another and ourselves.

Andrea G. Hardeman, M.S. is a multidisciplinary artist and bestselling author who ignites healing through visual art, poetry, and music, crafting narratives that foster self-discovery and empathy. Story behind (Black Butterfly): "This piece of gessobord was experimental, and it was my first time using this type of surface. I typically don’t like working on smooth surfaces; this became a place where I played and simply wiped off my brushes. I applied an experimental light wash to the gessobord, liked it, and decided to collage over it.

I let flow guide me and stared with the image of the woman. I flipped through Sister Outsider by Audre Lorde and created found poetry. While cutting the pages, I realized they looked like wings. Lorde’s quote was the crème de la crème for the piece.

Audre Lorde was a Black butterfly in her own right, when you look at her background. She explored her identity outside of societal constraints during her time in Mexico in 1954. Lorde is a celebrated Black le***an activist and writer whose influence echoes today. "

Next for our SLC Q***r showcase artist feature, we have Jess Hutto (.jess.makes ) with their piece, "Lovers", which is available for purchase at the Urban Arts Gallery.

Jess is a creative from Utah who enjoys an array of making in several mediums including drawing with pencil and pen, dance, sewing, crochet, and digital art. They enjoy exploring new mediums and seeking out new styles to express themselves. When they’re not crafting in their studio, they’re trying to DIY something for their house with their wife, dogs, and cat.

"This piece was inspired by the global phenomenon that was Heated Rivalry. Seeing the q***r joy and passion and desire in the series brought me so much joy and after watching twice, sharing countless HR memes to friends, and keeping the soundtrack on repeat, I spent over 15 hours creating this digital drawing of Shane and Ilya being… lovers. Sharing in this joy with friends has brought lightheartedness and levity in particularly dark times as q***r folk. To be able to rejoice in q***rness with the world has expanded my sense of community and this piece is my celebration of that."
