Tiny Beautiful Things is a play about reaching when you’re stuck, healing when you’re broken, and finding the courage to take on the questions that have no answers.

Based on the bestselling book by Cheryl Strayed and adapted for the stage by Nia Vardalos, Tiny Beautiful Things personifies the questions and answers that “Sugar” was publishing online from 2010-2012.

When the struggling writer was asked to take over the unpaid, anonymous position of advice columnist, Strayed used empathy and her personal experiences to help those seeking guidance for obstacles both large and small.

Director - Tamara Howell
Associate Director - Madison Howell Wilkins
Featuring: Tamara Howell, Stephanie Howell, Matthew Ivan Bennett, Ali Lente

Pygmalion Productions opens our 2025-2026 season with the beautiful and touching play “Tiny Beautiful Things,” by Cheryl Strayed, bestselling author of Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail.

Subtitled, Advice on Love and Life from Dear Sugar, this play is a solid, heart-heavy one-act. It tackles death, grief, birth, s*x, friendship, loss, and above all, love. Its humor is sufficient enough to stand on its own, but one second of humor turns into minutes of grief and self-reflection.

The play is based on the book by Cheryl Strayed and was adapted for the stage by Nia Vardalos.

The show runs November 7-22. Tickets go on sale tomorrow!

ROWLAND HALL TO PRESENT SALT LAKE CITY READING OF ‘ENOUGH! PLAYS TO END GUN VIOLENCE’ DURING OCTOBER NATIONWIDE PREMIERE

SALT LAKE CITY—Rowland Hall is proud to announce its participation in the 2025 nationwide reading of ENOUGH! Plays to End Gun Violence. The reading, followed by a brief panel discussion, will take place on Wednesday, October 8, at 7 pm in the Larimer Center for the Performing Arts. Admission is free.

Rowland Hall’s reading is part of a coordinated series of events taking place in 69 communities across 32 US states and territories, as well as Germany. It is the only reading in Utah. Participating communities will read six short plays about gun violence, all written by teens. Plays explore many angles of gun violence in America, from classrooms to neighborhoods to families, with a goal to unite art, activism, and youth voices to confront one of the defining issues of our time.

“These plays cut straight to the heart of what it means to grow up in America today,” said Michael Cotey, creator of ENOUGH! and Joaquin Oliver Artistic Produce. “They remind us that the voices most impacted by gun violence—young people—are also among the most powerful in driving change.”

When asked why Rowland Hall chose to join this year’s event, theatre teacher Matt Sincell shared, “Last year, one of Rowland Hall’s recent alums wrote a play for this contest and ended up being selected as one of the top 20 finalists. When we had an opportunity to then take part in the nationwide reading, my students were energized to add their voice to the national conversation.

“Unfortunately, the recent events across the country and in our own backyard have made these plays even more immediate. Governor Cox said that we all have a choice as to how we respond. My students have chosen to respond by amplifying the words of their fellow artists who demand an end to gun violence. We invite anyone, regular citizens and elected officials, to simply bear witness to what our young adults have to say.”

About ENOUGH! Plays to End Gun Violence
ENOUGH! empowers teens to confront gun violence by writing 10-minute plays that spark community conversation and inspire meaningful action on gun violence. Each fall, organizations nationwide present readings of six new teen-written plays, connecting local audiences to youth voices and local solutions.

This spring, ENOUGH! received 127 submissions from across the country. This year’s short plays were selected by a panel, including New York Times-bestselling author Jason Reynolds, Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and nationally recognized dramatists.
