🔥 Don’t miss this glimpse into one of the most powerful works in chamber music.

Leoš Janáček’s String Quartet No. 1 is intense, dramatic, and deeply expressive—and this video of the fourth movement, performed by the Fry Street Quartet, captures its raw emotional force.

The quartet is nicknamed “Kreutzer Sonata,” inspired by Leo Tolstoy’s novella The Kreutzer Sonata. The story is about jealousy, obsession, and a destructive marriage. Janáček composed it in 1923, late in life, during his intense (and complicated) emotional attachment to Kamila Stösslová. He wrote hundreds of letters to her and many scholars believe the quartet reflects his feelings—longing, agitation, tenderness.

Hear Fry Street Quartet perform it live this Sunday at 3pm at Libby Gardner Hall for NOVA's season finale.
