At first glance, they look like ordinary stone seats—but they were anything but ordinary.

These rare marble “thrones” stood in the front row of the sacred theatre at the Amphiareion of Oropos, a mysterious healing sanctuary where people traveled from across the ancient world seeking divine visions, cures, and answers from the legendary prophet-hero Amphiaraos.

Only priests, officials, and honored elites were allowed to sit here.

Everyone else sat behind them.

Carved with spiral symbols and mythic decoration, these seats witnessed rituals, performances, and ceremonies connected to one of Greece’s most fascinating oracle sites—where visitors even slept inside the sanctuary hoping the gods would send healing dreams.
