Contemplating this very fine vertical texture today. It is a total PIA to carve, but I really love it, especially the way it feels.

It’s my birthday! Playing in the garden, seeing friends, life is good.
I’ve never done a flower arrangement in one of my orchid pots, but the red-bud trimmings, spent hellebores and various weeds look really nice!
It’s a good day. 💜

You might have noticed 2025 is a Spiral motif for me. It snuck into my brain and won’t let go. I made this stamp about five years ago, but it is big and wood, so I could only use it on flat clay - or so I thought. Used it like a paddle on these. I love the deep texture. I want to try something really drippy on it next.
One of these cups was glazed at my demo at NCECA. The goal was to look as though I dip-applied the glaze, but, of course, I can’t dip with my textures. Three coats with a soft brush. First, horizontal along the bottom edge with a second stroke up vertically before the first stroke dries to prevent lines. Then thick brush strokes going down to catch extra glaze on the top of each spiral, as though the glaze settled and pooled there. This glaze is Rainy Day. One of my favs, ‘cuz !

I did a glaze demo for at NCECA and glazed one of these shot glasses as part of that. (Blue Purple above Lagoon.)
It made me wonder how reproducible my techniques are. So I glazed the second one after NCECA with my old pints of glaze which are much thicker than the fresh pints I had at NCECA. Dead on.
You can also look at my last two posts to see my attempt to duplicate the Ice and Rose Crystalline combo. Not as exact as these, but still pretty darn close.
My working theory is that the brush I use and the direction of the brush strokes for each of the 3 layers is more important than how thick the glaze is in my pint (excluding extremes, of course.) Next question: How important is the brush?
Sorry I did not get a video of the demo. I just didn’t have a way to make it happen. I hope to shoot a series of demos this month.

A moment to breathe! NCECA was awesome. Covid afterward, not so much. I’m finally feeling good, and not so buried in backlog that I can’t think straight. Woot!

So I finally opened the kiln from Monday’s fire. So happy with this kiln load. Check out this plump beauty! Ice Blue above Rose Crystalline. Yummy!

Hope to see you there.

Is it time for more tall mugs? I think you all know I have a love/hate relationship with mugs. Brush application of glaze to a handle is very tedious work, but I do love a good game of “Drip Exactly Here.”

It has been a purple week here. My hubby is . He hand builds guitar effects pedals. He is releasing the Octina today, which is VERY purple. I made incense shards to go with them. Purple, wrapped in purple. Finished Tree Study VI: purple tree. And to top it off, the only piece that survived my kiln programming screw up was this purple beauty.
Sometimes the universe whispers “purple” at me. I think I got all cap’ed this week.

Throwback Thursday to 1998.
I have been using a spiral motif in the laser lately, and feeling oddly nostalgic about it. Spirals have always been important in my life, but I couldn’t figure out this strong emotional connection I was having. Then I noticed this pot in my brother’s office. I gave it to him 27 years ago. This sprigged spiral was on all my work for at least a year back then, maybe two. I had completely forgotten. (You know, pre-social media so I didn’t have a IG journal of it.)
I swiped it from his office for a few photos. I like this one in my living room best.

Finished the incense tiles this weekend. These are for my hubby’s company, Spiral Electric FX. A free gift with some special pedals he built. I also made the boxes, which I love! I might need to make one from clay.
