SANDY, Utah ( ) â Police arrested a suspect several days after the leader of the Utah Islamic Center was believed to have been followed and shot at in Sandy.
Abdul Raouf Afridi, 39, was arrested Saturday, facing 12 counts of aggravated assault in connection with a shooting on Monday night.
Imam Shuaib Din, leader of the Utah Islamic Center, said he was followed and shot at multiple times while driving to evening prayers. Din said the suspect pulled up next to him and fired several shots toward his vehicle.
âI think it was to hurt me,â Din said. âItâs not just once, itâs twice, and then eight shotsâall directed at me. Itâs by the mercy of God, His protection, that none of those eight bullets hit me.â
While the suspect is facing aggravated assault charges, the officer noted in the probable cause that it was possible the suspect intended to kill the victim.
âYour affiant believes that suspect attempted to kill the victim by waiting for them to leave their residence and then fired multiple shots at the victim while the victim was driving,â the officer wrote.
Officials with the Sandy Police Department did not comment on whether the incident is still being investigated as a possible hate crime, but noted that Din knew the suspect prior to the shooting.
âWe will be working with the Salt Lake County District Attorneyâs Office for the filing of formal charges related to this incident. This remains an active investigation, and we have no further updates at this time,â police said.
