Sascha Lewis

This is a portrait of my daughter, Sascha Lewis, when she was around 6 years old. It was that awkward stage in life when front teeth were still growing in. The daycare she attended had a professional portrait day, and the reference photo was taken at that time. I paid special attention to the shadowing, the muscle definition, the intricate lace in the umbrella, and her hair bow to have that translucent effect. I also drew this in graphite pencil completely from left to right, which was really tough to do and keep the proportions correct. At one point I had to redo the face because the features didn't match the slight tilt in the head. This drawing was drawn to update to a portrait I did of her as a newborn, where I even added the actual hair bow she wore in the hospital. I drew that one during my 2-week paternity leave from work.

Pfeifferhorn from Maybird

I have stood atop the summit of the Pfeifferhorn and gazed down the precipitous cliff into Maybird Gulch. I have spent time camped around Maybird Lake and basked in the evening alpine glow of the Pfeifferhorn. This view has always been one of my favorites in the Wasatch Mountains.

Although my usual style is abstract expressionism, I wanted to revisit the scene in my studio to capture some of the peace and solitude that can be had in Maybird Gulch.

To create the chunky rock fields surrounding the peaks and the lake, I loaded a brush with several earth tones from Gamblin, using small deliberate dabs to create a thick impasto texture. The sky and lake were blended smoothly to contrast the harsh jumble of the rocks, providing a bit of tranquility amongst the chaos.

This painting was inspired by the journey we experience from pain to healing. The tears symbolize release, the bold colors represent the pain, while the vibrant colors reflect hope, renewal, and transformation. Through this piece, I wanted to express that even in our deepest struggles, healing is possible. It is a reminder that brokenness can be transformed into strength, beauty, and new life.
