🎉 ONE year of Weila!

From being hand-reared by her dedicated care team and introduced to foster mom, Acara, to confidently climbing and exploring, Weila has come a long way in her first year.

These days, she’s all about zoomies and keeping Acara on her toes. She has a mouth full of teeth and knows exactly what she likes. Orange veggies? 🥕 Yes, please. 🌽 Corn? Absolutely. Something she’s not feeling? Trust us, she’ll let us know.

As part of her journey, Weila continues to learn from Acara and grows more confident. Her personality is really starting to shine! She’s silly, expressive, and playful, and spends more time playing with Acara. Their care team shares that it’s fun to watch their relationship evolve and see how Acara supports Weila’s development through play.

While today is a celebration of Weila, it’s also an opportunity to highlight the importance of protecting this critically endangered species. Bornean orangutans have declined by more than 50% in the last 60 years, largely due to habitat loss and the unsustainable palm oil trade. You can download the Palm Oil Scan App (cmzoo.org/conservation/orangutans-palm-oil/palm-oil-scan-mobile-app) to identify products made with sustainable palm oil and make orangutan-friendly shopping choices.

Thank you for following along as this little orangutan has grown, learned, climbed, played, and stolen hearts every step of the way.

Happy first birthday, Weila! 🧡

🦒 Long necks. Big impact. Today is World Giraffe Day!

Giraffes may be the world’s tallest land mammals, but they’re facing a “silent extinction.” Populations in their natural habitats have declined by nearly 30% in the past 35 years, with relatively little public awareness.

That’s why we proudly support The Association of Zoos and Aquariums Giraffe SAFE (Saving Animals From Extinction) program and Save Giraffes Now. Together with more than 100 AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums, we’re helping protect giraffes through conservation action, research, education, public awareness, and expert animal care. Since 2017, these collective efforts have contributed more than $9.1 million to giraffe conservation.

Every visit to Hogle Zoo helps support wildlife conservation around the globe. Stop by African Savanna, say hello to our giraffe herd, and learn how your visit helps create a future where giraffes continue to stand tall. 🧡

🎉👑 Happy birthday, Princess!

Today we’re celebrating Princess, who turns 47! As one of the oldest southern white rhinos in human care, Princess receives specialized geriatric care.

She participates in choice and control every day, so there may be times when she is not visible to the public. Some days she chooses to stay inside, take a morning nap in the barn before shifting outside, or let us know she wants to come in early.

Thanks to a long, trusting relationship with her care team, Princess voluntarily participates in laser therapy twice a week to help manage arthritis in her rear left ankle and support healing in old pressure sore areas. She also participates in routine blood draws, receives fluids, and is currently being re-trained to stand for X-rays so we can continue monitoring her health as she ages.

She gets a customized diet to support her changing needs, including soaked grain to help prevent choking and increase hydration. Princess also receives finely chopped hay to make eating easier with her missing teeth.

Recently, Princess has become a little more cautious about wearing her iconic fly mask. Her care team is working with her through positive reinforcement training to rebuild her comfort with it. In the meantime, she receives fly repellent cream around her eyes to keep her comfortable.

Princess comes into the barn every night, where keepers monitor her via cameras and track her activity while she rests, helping us understand her health and wellbeing around the clock.

Princess loves spending time with her care team. She’s always happy to check in for extra snacks, enjoys bath time and mud sessions, and after a good spa day, she can still surprise everyone with a few zoomies around her habitat. 🩷💜

💛 Not to be dramatic, but this is the cutest thing we’ve ever seen.

Meet Briar, a male North American porcupette born on May 23, 2026, to mom Blackberry and dad Barton! Named by donors Craig and Sue Jones, Briar weighed just under 2 pounds at birth and is already brave, approaching the habitat mesh to meet the care team.

During your next visit to Wild Utah, you may spot Briar inside a crate or close to Blackberry. In their natural habitats and under our care, porcupettes typically stay tucked away during the day while mom forages.

Depending on their needs, they may spend time in either their outdoor habitat or indoor space, and they will rotate habitat access with Barton every other day. Because of these rotations, seeing Briar and Blackberry may take a little luck, but we promise they're worth the wait! Porcupines develop quickly, so he could be climbing around the habitat soon.

A quilly cute fact: Porcupettes are born with soft quills that begin hardening within hours of birth.
