Do you ever wish you could go back to school? But like, a school where you’re actually interested in what you’re learning, and no one’s grading you?

We call that Acrylic Foundations. And it starts on Thursday night, September 3. Over eight weeks, you’ll get a full introduction to acrylics: the materials, the fundamentals of color mixing, and the process of creating a painting you’ll be proud to show off.

See you there!

How does color create mood? How can you layer atmosphere and depth into your work? And maybe the biggest question of all, where do you even start with abstract painting?

Next week we’re kicking off a new month of Abstract Foundations, a class built to take your painting in entirely new directions. September focuses on contemporary artist Emily Manson and how color relationships can strengthen a composition.

All skill levels are welcome.

It’s time to throw out your boring mugs and make something with a little personality!

Join us for a hands-on workshop covering the fundamentals of sculpting, adding attachments, and painting with underglaze.

We’ll have pre-thrown pieces ready for you to work with, so no pottery experience is required.

Sunday, September 20. Taught by Britny Snel.

A flat triangle looks like a mistake. Add one shadow and suddenly it’s 3D. That’s the whole thing. Light side, dark side.

Life doesn’t give you perfect mountains. Usually there’s shadows in your lights, lights in your darks. But the principle stays the same. Identify your peaks, shade one side, add some shadows in the light. That’s mountain painting.

Simple doesn’t mean easy. But go one step at a time and it all starts to click.

Come learn with in Watercolor Foundations 1 every Monday morning or Wednesday afternoon.

Throwing on the wheel. It looks a lot easier than it actually is the first time you sit down with clay in your hands.

But we’re here to help you learn.

It’s about understanding that the direction of the wheel changes how your hands need to work. It’s about using your body weight instead of your arms. It’s about following the clay up as you cone it, not just holding it still.

Centering looks simple. Two hands. Spinning clay. But there’s strategy in every move.

Gabrielle Oman breaks down what centering actually requires.

Not muscle. Not magic. Just positioning and physics and showing up with the right approach.

Design and create your own cohesive dinner set in September’s Continuing Ceramics class.

And you’ll finish it in time to wow your family and friends at Thanksgiving and holiday gatherings.

Our monthly projects are approachable for all skill levels, so whether you’re a beginner or an experienced potter, you’ll learn something new and finish with a beautiful collection of pieces.

We have Continuing Ceramics classes on Monday or Wednesday nights, and you also get access to our Open Studio on Thursdays for additional practice and feedback.

Two weeks ago, we partnered with and Tracy Aviary for Studio Sessions: Visions of the West. It was four days dedicated to creating and appreciating art, with artists exploring multiple mediums and projects, and finishing with a full day of painting at Nature Center at Pia Okwai.

Tonight, from 7 to 830 pm, UMOCA is hosting a pop-up exhibition of the final work from the Studio Sessions artists. They are such a talented, passionate group, and we can’t wait to see all their work on display.

Come show your support for these amazing local organizations and enjoy a fun night of art and connection.

Thomas Olson fell in love with clay in elementary school. Not because he was good at it, but because it felt like home.

Over time, it became an obsession.

Now he makes dishes for a world that forgot to care about them. He digs his clay from rivers. He cuts his own tools from cookie tins. He throws a piece and asks: Where does the clay want to go? He doesn’t worry about what to make.

Because there’s a beauty missing from everyday things. Paper bowls. Mass-produced dishes. But when you eat from something made by hand, something shifts. It becomes a ritual. The food matters more.

You matter more.

His mind goes blank when he’s working. The worries melt away. That peace is what ends up in every piece.

’s work is currently on display at our studio. Come check it out.
