Our last eight-week Oil Painting Foundations semester of the year kicks off on Tuesday, November 3, at 10 am.

We’re so excited to welcome talented painter Christie (Christie Whipple) to our teaching team. Christie has been oil painting for twelve years, and her personal work explores the relationships between people and their environments.

Christie is introducing a brand-new Oil Foundations curriculum to end the year on a high note. From composition and color mixing to still life and independent projects, our beginner-friendly class will teach you the basics of oil painting in a welcoming community setting.

Local ceramicist Molly (Dune Studio) is coming back to the studio on Sunday, November 8, to teach you how to throw bottleneck vases on the wheel! You’ll learn how to create nearly closed forms, from simple bottles to elegantly flared bud vases.

During the four-hour workshop, Molly will lead multiple demos and work with you one-on-one as you practice. At the end of the day, you’ll choose a couple of your favorites for us to fire.

If you already have a basic understanding of how to use a pottery wheel and are looking to improve your skills, this workshop is for you.

We’re so excited to head to Sugar House Distillery for our next collaborative Art of Spirits workshop on Saturday, November 7, at 3 pm.

In their private barrel room, you’ll paint a colorful tote while enjoying a guided tasting of canned cocktails made with Sugar House’s grain-to-glass spirits.

Find your favorite cocktail, learn about the distilling process, and leave with your own hand-painted Sugar House Distillery tote bag to remember the experience.

This workshop is 21+, so even if you aren’t planning on drinking, you’ll still need a valid ID to attend. See you soon Sugar House Distillery

Fall is the perfect season to wrap up in a blanket and start journaling about your goals and ideas for next year. It’s even better in a journal you made yourself.

Artist Amanda Parramoure is coming back to the studio on Saturday, November 7, to teach another bookbinding workshop. This time, you’ll handcraft a leather or faux leather journal using the traditional long-stitch technique.

Learn how to punch and sew pages directly into your cover, mix in beautiful scrapbook papers for color and personality, and finish with a charm that makes it unmistakably yours.

“I love when people show me the landscapes that mean something to them. I like when people can connect with the land and tell me the story.”

Abby Evans has always been an outside person. Landscapes. That’s what called to her as a kid when she worked with Mary Ann Johnson, a landscape artist who lived across the street.

Years passed. Then one Christmas, four or five years ago, she asked her husband for something specific: watercolor lessons. She wanted back in.

Now she makes landscapes that mean something. People bring her photographs of places that shaped them, places they’ve hiked, places they remember. And she paints them. Because when you see your story in a painting, something shifts. You see the land differently. You feel it.

We’re so excited to announce our next workshop in partnership with Tracy Aviary’s Nature Center at Pia Okwai. Join us Saturday, October 24, for an afternoon immersed in the art and science of nature’s changing seasons.

The workshop starts with a guided nature walk led by an Aviary ecologist, where you’ll learn about the trees common to our local ecosystem and the science behind why their leaves change color.

Then, it’s time to paint! Inspired by the vibrant shifts of autumn, you’ll practice simple watercolor techniques to blend, layer, and bleed rich seasonal colors on paper. You’ll work from leaves found around the Nature Center to create your own beautiful leaf study.

This workshop hosted by Nature Center at Pia Okwai moves at a relaxed pace and is open to artists and nature lovers of every level.
