One week of rehearsals is officially in the books for Very Like a Whale! 🐋

This play had us laughing from the very first read! There’s nothing quite like putting a brilliant crew of artists in a room with a brand-new play and watching the magic (and mayhem) start to happen.

The lake is disappearing. The family is unraveling. And somehow, there are whales involved.

We can’t wait to bring Troy Deutsch’s Very Like a Whale to life and share this World Premiere with you!

Meet Troy Deutsch, the playwright for our 55th season opener, Very Like a Whale! In collaboration with Flying Bobcat Theatrical Laboratory, a co-world premiere with Cadence Theatre Company, Richmond, Virginia. Directed by Alexandra Harbold.

Troy is a Brooklyn-based playwright and filmmaker from rural Minnesota. His play Bull Shark Attack received its world premiere at Salt Lake Acting Company and was part of SLAC's New Play Sounding Series and SLAC's Playwrights' Lab. Troy's play Climbing With Tigers also premiered at SLAC, in collaboration with Flying Bobcat Theatrical Laboratory and Red Fred Project.

He is currently in pre-production on his first feature film, Nasty. His short film Brown Fish played at 15 festivals, winning the Most Original Film Award from Blackbird Film Festival and the Audience Award for Best Experimental Short from the Adirondack Film Festival. Troy’s plays have been developed Off-Broadway at The New Group and Rattlestick Theater.

His one-woman show about Trump’s mom, Orangutan, premiered at the Hollywood Fringe and won the Best of the Fringe Award. His plays In a Tilted Place and Lake Water premiered at IRT Theater in the West Village. The University of Utah produced his play Pussycat, a regional finalist with Kennedy Center ACTF. Troy also studied with Nicky Silver as part of The Vineyard Theatre’s Fall Playwriting Workshop. As an actor, he appeared in Rabbit Hole (Broadway u/s, Manhattan Theatre Club), and he received his BFA from the University of Utah Actor Training Program.

CAST & CREATIVE ANNOUNCEMENT!!!

Introducing the Cast and Creative Team for the World Premiere of Very Like a Whale by Troy Deutsch, in Collaboration with Flying Bobcat Theatrical Laboratory! Our 55th Season opener will be directed by Alexandra Harbold and run in our Upstairs Theatre from September 30th through October 25th, 2026.

The cast of eight includes SLAC veterans and two newcomers to our stage. Returning to SLAC will be Olivia Custodio as Megan, M. Scott McLean* as Chester, Sarah Shippobotham as Miss Penelope Dickinson, Robert Scott Smith* as Greg, Yolanda Stange* as Old Woman, and Ben Young as Old Man. Making their SLAC debuts in the show will be Mack Barr as Sophia and Devoree Ellis* as Max. Kelsie Jepsen will be the understudy for the role of Megan.

Joining director Alexandra Harbold on the creative team will be Adriana Lemke (Asst. Director/Fight & Intimacy Director), Erik Reichert (Set Designer/Construction Supervisor), Timothy Swenson (Lighting Designer), Cynthia L. Kehr Rees** (Sound Designer), Niamh Helwig (Costume Designer), Arika Schockmel (Props Designer), Bridgette Lehman* (Production Stage Manager), and Cynthia Fleming (Executive Artistic Director).

Who we’re seeking:
A diverse ensemble of actors 18 and older. Roles are open to all genders, races, ethnicities, and body types. Actors with disabilities are strongly encouraged to audition. Actors are paid weekly.

The Pigeon Gets a Big Time Holiday Extravaganza! is a non-union production. All other productions are open to both Union and Non-Union actors.
