Some of you may know that I served in the Army National Guard. I was Airborne Qualified for the last few years of my enlistment, and was lucky enough to be able to earn foreign Wings for my first jump out of Airborne School.

My deployment was very different from what I had been expecting during my years of drill and training leading up to it. I was privileged to get to visit Bahrain, UAE, and Qatar (where the jump happened).

That first photo shows me on the bottom-right (I was borrowing that helmet and recognized the markings). Look at those feet and knees together 🤣. Also featured: a much younger and more fit version of myself (almost a decade ago!), as well as a sweaty shot of me walking outside back from the grocery only a couple of minutes away (gotta love that Bahraini Summer Heat!)

In Japan, when someone is about to leave home they'll often say "Ittekimasu" 行ってきます which means "I'll go and come back". The response is "Itterashai" which is like a "see you later"

I'm planning to work through the InterMission DLC and Rebirth in Japanese as well some time this year. Tune in for more Japanese language comparisons!

Not that this means much, but I'm almost to 100 subscribers on YouTube! I'll be releasing more content shortly (focusing on Spelunky 2 again for a bit), so stay tuned!

Much love, and thanks for the support!

⚠️ Mistborn / Allomancy & Feruchemy spoilers ahead!

One of the coolest parts of designing a hypothetical Mistborn game was figuring out how Feruchemy could change the way players interact with the experience.

Imagine intentionally dealing with:
👁️ Blurry vision to store up sight
🐢 Slower movement to save up bursts of speed
💪 Weakness and extra vulnerability in order to become incredibly strong when it matters most

Every sacrifice becomes an investment, and each investment changes how you approach the rest of the run.

This is just an example of the decision-making you often encounter in roguelikes.

⚠️ Minor spoilers for Mistborn: the Final Empire

Every great roguelike usually finds the player asking "How do I survive a little bit longer?"
In Hades, it's Death Defiance. in Spelunky, it's the Ankh.

In a Mistborn Roguelike? It might be Atium. A rare resource that gives you one more chance when everything goes wrong feels like a perfect fit for a game based in the Final Empire.

What other Mistborn mechanics do you think would translate well into a roguelike?
