Every great story needs a CHARACTER.

And that's where I start when I'm planning a party, too.

For me, that's the THEME.

But I don't start by asking:

"What decorations should I make?"

I start with:

WHO am I celebrating?

What do they love?
What feels like them?
What would make them walk into the room and immediately know this party was created specifically for them?

Then I start defining the big ideas:

🎉 What's the theme?
🎂 What's the cake concept?
🍽️ What's the meal or snack concept?

I'm not choosing every food or designing the cake yet.

I'm deciding what belongs in THIS person's story.

For Jim, that answer started with something wonderfully simple:

"I want a Taskmaster party."

And that one sentence gave me my CHARACTER.

Tomorrow, we give our story somewhere to happen.

I think a great party works a lot like a great story.

Every great story needs:

👤 A CHARACTER
🏠 A SETTING
📖 A PLOT

And strangely enough, I think every great party needs those same three things.

The CHARACTER gives us our THEME.

The SETTING creates the ATMOSPHERE.

And the PLOT gives us SOMETHING FUN to do.

Last week I showed you WHAT we're planning for Jim's 60th birthday.

This week I'm going to show you how I take an idea like TASKMASTER and start turning it into a party.

Because the goal isn't just to make something that looks good in pictures.

It's to create a celebration that feels like the person we're celebrating and gives us moments we'll remember for years.

HE ASKED FOR A PARTY. 🎉

If you've been following along this week, you know why those five words are kind of a big deal around here.

But I've been keeping TWO secrets from you.

First...

🎂 JIM IS TURNING 60!

And for the first time in our marriage, he didn't just agree to let me throw him a party.

He ASKED me for one.

So what kind of party does he want for his 60th?

🏆 TASKMASTER.

Yep. We're turning the hit British TV show into a birthday party.

Since our birthdays are only a week apart, we're celebrating together on November 1. And I've already started designing, planning and figuring out just how ridiculous we're willing to make this thing.

There will be tasks.

There will be questionable interpretations of the rules.

There will be a Taskmaster.

And there will apparently be a throne. 😂

After all these years, I can't tell you how happy it makes me that Jim didn't just agree to have a birthday party.

He asked for one.

And you better believe I'm going to make it HIS.

This escalated quickly. 😂

But there's actually a reason I'm so excited about the fact that Jim asked for this party.

For most of our marriage, Jim hasn't wanted a birthday party.

Over the years, that's slowly changed.

But this year he did something he's NEVER done before.

He asked me to throw him one. ❤️

And he knew exactly what he wanted.
