Is a can of beans a good party gift...or just a good joke? 😂

While planning my son's Roblox Forsaken birthday party, he asked me to design a tumbler that looked like a can of beans.

Naturally, I asked:

"Is that a good party gift...or just a good joke? Because honestly, who is going to use a tumbler that looks like a can of beans?

Without hesitation he said:
"I would."

Well...that changes things.

So I made the tumbler,bBut not just any bean can tumbler.
He wanted it to look exactly like the one from the game.

Not inspired by it.
Not a better version.

The exact version.

And honestly, that's why my son serves as my accuracy control department. 😂

When you're planning a party for a theme you don't understand, your job isn't to decide what should matter. Your job is to discover what matters to the guest of honor.

Sometimes the thing that seems random to us is the thing they'll be most excited about.

Okay, people...

What do you do when you son comes to you and says, "Mom, I want a forsaken Birthday party." And I had absolutely no idea what it was. 😂

None. Zero.

Not only was the theme obscure, but my son is also the kind of person who wants everything to be as close to the original as possible.

In fact, he would rather have something less polished but more accurate than something prettier but wrong. So I couldn't just create a party inspired by Forsaken.

I had to learn Forsaken.

That meant sitting beside him while he played.
Asking questions.
Taking notes.
Watching gameplay.

And then submitting my work for inspection. 😂
Every few days he checks my progress and politely explains what I've gotten wrong.

And honestly?

That process taught me one of the most important lessons about obscure party themes:

When you don't understand the theme, your first job isn't shopping.
It's becoming a student.

This week I'll be sharing how I'm building a party for a theme I didn't understand, and the process I use whenever my kids choose something that doesn't exist in party stores or even on Etsy.

Oh, oh, oh, oh, wait...
Can we talk about the Save Gotham Clues?

The Save Gotham Escape Room/Mystery Game had the most amazing clues because the clues weren't just random puzzles thrown into a game.
Each one was designed around one of the criminals our vigilantes were trying to catch.

Some required physical challenges.
Some tested observation skills.
Some demanded teamwork.
Others required guests to notice tiny details hiding in plain sight.

The clues arrived on Arkham Asylum stationery and case files, making every discovery feel like part of a real investigation.
And here's the thing...
The answers weren't always hidden.

Sometimes they were right in front of you.
You just had to look differently.
A number mattered.
An order mattered.
A word placement mattered.
A pattern mattered.

My daughter said she loved the experience and felt like the game had the right balance of thought provoking puzzles followed by physical puzzles to keep you engaged and make you want to rescue Batman.

That's what I love about escape-room-style games.
The decorations may set the stage, but the clues make guests part of the story.

And by the end of the party, every solved puzzle brought our vigilantes one step closer to finding Batman.

🚨ALERT 🚨

Arkham Prison had suffered a major breakout.
Several dangerous criminals had escaped.
And Gotham City's greatest hero was missing.

With Batman nowhere to be found, Gotham PD needed help. Not from ordinary citizens. From vigilantes.

Before the investigation could begin, each party guest received a special GCPD case file and created their own vigilante persona. Hero names, identities, custom Bat Signals...everything needed to join the mission.

The best party games don't start when the first clue is handed out. They start when guests become part of the story.

Once their files were complete, it was time to open the first piece of evidence.
A note left behind by The Joker:

*"Bats thought he could stop the fun. Now he's disappeared, and the game is just beginning. If you want to find him, you'll have to follow the trail..."*

And just like that...The investigation was underway.

Okay, people...

I had a whole week of birthday content planned.

And then...

It became party week. 😂

The decorations needed finishing.
The games needed testing.
The food needed shopping.
The printables needed cutting.
The supplies needed organizing.

And honestly? That's exactly what we've been talking about these past few weeks.

At some point, the content has to take a back seat to the celebration.

Yesterday was party day.

The planning was done.
The prep was done.
The guests arrived.
The games were played.
The memories were made.

And today?

Today is a rest day. ☕😂

The kind of rest day that comes after weeks of planning, prepping, crafting, shopping, decorating, cooking, and celebrating.

They're built in the late nights, the checklists, the crafting messes, the grocery runs, and all the little details done with love.

Hello, Family...can we talk about these Bat Burger MENUS for a second? 👀🦇🍔
This might be one of my favorite details from the whole party.

I designed custom comic book-style graphics for every burger, side, and ingredient so the menu actually feels like something you’d see hanging inside a real superhero burger restaurant.

And honestly? THIS is why custom parties feel different.
The decorations aren’t just decorations anymore. They help tell the story.
