Thank you William Arning (Founder) and Two Coats of Paint for your thoughtful review and conversation with Henry Klimowicz about his solo exhibition, Methods of Proceeding on view in the gallery through September 27!

William Arning (Founder) writes: “Darwin famously marveled at honeybees’ instinctive ability to construct geometrically efficient hexagonal cells, seeing the hive as an extraordinary product of natural selection. Earlier theologians, of course, saw such apparent perfection as reflecting the purposeful design of a divine watchmaker. Klimowicz’s own studio practice can likewise seem marvelous and nearly impossible. Or, like a swimmer, the artist loses himself in a hand-based zone of creation and keeps going until his giant, mysterious forms achieve their faux solidity.”

On view this weekend, 11-5PM. Lobitos: Pueblo Fantasma (Lobitos:Ghost Town), a solo exhibition by photographer, Summers Moore.

Lobitos: Pueblo Fantasma showcases a compelling look at the life of a small Peruvian fishing village that has undergone many identities. In the 19th century, Lobitos was a booming 19th-century oil town under colonial rule and then became a military outpost, eventually becoming a semi-abandoned ghost town inhabited by surfers, healers and artists living amongst deteriorating historic buildings and military barracks. Lobitos Pueblo Fantasma is a story of transformation: of things built, abandoned and made into new.

On view this weekend! Henry Klimowicz’s Methods of Proceeding.

Methods of Proceeding examines the practice of sculpture – Klimowicz’s sculptural practice mirrors many of the methods of the swimmer and the bee.

Henry Klimowicz writes: “When you swim, you are between two opposing objectives: one, to hold onto the water and make it solid; two, to pass through the water as if it was gas. Navigating this duality requires the swimmer to get all of this form into the core of their muscles and out of their brain, as a hunny bee embodies form, creating structures not through thought but through instinct. At its best swimming and art making are like the bee building, an act of embodied form creation, not thinking.”

On view now at Geary! Captured while visiting her daughter’s equine therapy ranch in Lobitos, Summers Moore befriended Inti, a local artist and community organizer who runs a community art center called Kapchay. Several pieces in this exhibition show Inti’s murals, beautifully painted on crumbling buildings near the ocean. This exhibition encompasses Moore’s interest in exploring the many facets of healing and community building visible through photography.
