NEWBURYPORT — The Actors Studio of Newburyport presents “People Like That,” an original musical by Ellie Lee, starting June 5 and ending June 14, at the Firehouse Center for the Arts, 1 Market Square, Newburyport.
Performances take place June 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14. Friday and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 5 p.m. Tickets (adults $30, seniors $25, students $20) can be purchased online at www.firehouse.org.
Seven years ago, The Actors Studio presented the original version of this musical “Conflict of Interest” at the Firehouse. Since then, Deb Severo and Anna Smulowitz developed the script further and retitled the piece, sharpening the focus on the main theme of acceptance and mutual respect.
The play takes place in the 1980’s as two young women fall in love with each other, learning to recognize their true selves and how to navigate the responses of their friends and loved ones. The story includes many relatable characters whose story lines parallel those of the two main characters, as they each seek to be seen as their authentic selves. Delivered with humor and beautiful music, the story is upbeat and promotes diversity and inclusion.
Featured actors include. Violet Veith, Maggie Mifsud, Shannon Muhs, Steven Berger, Scott Jedry, Greg DeZarn-O’Hare, Donna Story, David Houlden, Elaine Concepcion, Kellan Upton, Lila Anthony, Clare Ward, Silas Moltz, Finnley Upton and Meara Reeder.
