It is important to remember being advanced at something does not increase your value as a human. Remembering that our value comes from being a human, not from being impressive at a sport or art form helps us avoid unhealthy comparison.

Shift language from “I am better than so and so” to “I am a more advanced dancer than where I started.” Your growth has nothing to do with anyone else’s progress or lack thereof. Your journey is your own.

Your inherent value and the value of others never changes. You do not become a “better” person when you finally get a flat split. The only thing that changed is your ability to do a split, which does not make you “better” than anyone else. It simply made you advance in your technique. As you develop your skills as a dancer the value of you doesn’t change—what changes is your effectiveness to communicate with your body.

Watch the dancers around you. Allow yourself to be inspired. Admire everyone’s uniqueness. Instead of comparing yourself, appreciate every artist. Know your worth as a human being.

This way of being enriches our lives and helps us grow.

Sometimes directors of professional companies will favor certain qualities in the dancers they hire or there will be physical stipulations in order to even qualify to join. An example of this is in order to be a Rockette you must be between 5’5” and 5' 10 1/2”, but if you want to play Tinkerbell at Disney World you have to be between 4’10” and 5’2”.

We cannot change our height. We are born with the body we are given and what a wonderful gift that is. We can increase strength/ flexibility and learn to become more truthful in the way we connect with our limbs, but the body we are given at birth is the body we keep our whole life.

The variation in our bodies is what makes truth in our technique look unique to us. We have the ability to create our very own movement signature because of our differences. Learn to value the parts of you that make you, you.

There is a place for every body in the dance community, and there is absolutely a place for everyone at Lifehouse. When we refine our technique, it becomes truthful. Truth in our unique movement signature is what makes movement beautiful, not any one physical attribute.

Shifting our thoughts can pose quite a challenge. The first step is becoming an observer of the thoughts we have. After observing our thoughts without judgment, we can rewrite what we want our new thought to be moving forward. Sometimes before we can rewrite it we need to allow any accompanying emotions to pass through us. When we feel and release the emotions from our original thought, we are able to let it go and begin to shift.

We frequently hear the phrase, “Don’t compare yourself to others.” Let’s take a closer look at what this means.

Part of being human is to observe the people around us. We are wired to notice similarities and differences. This noticing is normal to our human experience and is not something that we should just shut down long-term.

However, it is important to be mindful of what we do with the information we take in. We want to avoid creating a better-than/ worse-than list in our mind. Otherwise, we end up basing our identity on how we rank ourselves amongst our peers, continually deciding who has more or less value than we do.

Instead, neutrally observe similarities and differences. Notice that everyone has things that are easy and things that are hard for them, and while those differences make each of us unique, they also unite us in having a human experience.

Every person’s light is equally valuable.
