As colder weather is arriving in our area, it is now necessary to check humidity levels in your home, particularly if you own string instruments such as violins, violas, cellos, basses or guitars as examples. These string instruments do best in the colder months if humidity levels are between 40%-45% inside your home.

In order to help keep those levels inside your home, you’ll need to have a humidifier either as as integrated part of your furnace system, or as a specific humidifying unit in a room. Also, you should have a way to measure humidity. There are many types available from simple, like the type that comes as a set with a temperature gauge and barometer, or digital—some can “Bluetooth” to your phone or other mobile device.

Typical repairs to string instruments can be top or back plates separating from the sides, the neck separating from the body or cracks forming on the top or back. Remember, now is the time to start keeping up with humidity changes that can lead to costly repairs to your cherished instrument. Remember also, that quality string instruments are made for longevity with special adhesives knowing that repairs might be necessary in the future. Locate a competent repair shop to perform any needed repairs, do not jeopardize your instrument’s health or value by DIYing your instrument.

She recently completed studies thru the acclaimed University of New Hampshire string instrument care courses and is excited to provide quality service on all orchestral instrument bows.

I have known Manda for many years since we are performing members of the Salina Symphony. She always gives 100% to her projects, students and relationships and is, already, a strong contributor to the string-playing community’s bow care needs. I welcome her and her bow care talents as we support the string instrument playing community.
