As we are celebrating pride we are returning our thoughts to Fashioning for Freedom: Layers of Liberty where we highlighted Edmonia Lewis. A Black and indigenous sculptor, Lewis practiced her art in the United States before eventually moving to Italy. In Rome, she joined a group of expatriate female artists. This circle was largely made up of q***r women, a few of those being Charlotte Cushman, Harriet Hosmer, and Anne Whitney. This creative community elevated female artists, bringing them the recognition and admiration they deserved. In Rome, Lewis and her art thrived. She began sculpting from marble, working in the neoclassical style, and created some of her most well known pieces. While we do not know today how Edmonia would choose to represent herself, we do know that within this group of q***r women, Edmonia found community, comfort, and creativity. Happy Pride, Edmonia!

On this day in 1692, Bridget Bishop was executed. She had been convicted of witchcraft by a jury just days earlier, after being arrested and held for trial in April.

Today, we see the flaws in Puritan logic, and we mourn the loss of Bridget and all those unjustly killed during the Salem Witch Trials. This is the Salem Witch Trials Memorial at Charter Street Cemetery. People continue to visit and leave gifts on the memorial stones in remembrance.

Bridget Bishop dressed as she liked, including in clothes “above her station.” She took no flak from anyone, even to the point of conviction for public arguing. She was thought of as cantankerous or overly flattering on occasion, but Bridget left her mark on Salem.

We are honored to carry her story forward in this century. We hope that as you watch, question, and vote, we can give you something new to keep thinking about, whether that’s about Bridget and her time, or how it intersects with ours.

Happy Birthday Rose Hawthorne Lathrop! Rose was the daughter of Nathaniel and Sophia Hawthorne. As a child, she and her family lived abroad in several cities. She married George Parsons Lathrop in 1871. He published her serialized novel, Miss Dilletante, in the Boston Courier. Rose also published a book of poems, Along the Shore.
As their marriage suffered, due to the death of their son and family quarrels over Nathaniel Hathorne’s legacy, Rose found purpose in the Catholic faith and charity. She founded the Servants of Relief for Incurable Cancer, an order of nuns specifically devoted to caring for patients with cancer, which at the time were turned away by hospitals as they could not be treated. She received awards for this work from the National Institute for Social Sciences, Bowdoin College, and the Rotary Club of New York.
