We want to know — would you be interested in purchasing one through an informal auction here on Instagram? Answer here or in our story! When Agata Pydynkowsi introduces Natalie Hays Hammond to guests during the opening of the 1952 Settlement Association Open House, she struggles to find words to accurately describe everything Hammond has accomplished in her life.

Hammond was a set and costume designer, a broadway producer, an inventor, a business woman, a published author and illustrator, a fine artist, an architect, an interior designer, a philanthropist, Colonel of the Massachusetts Women’s Defense Corps during WWII, and so much more.

Here are just some of our favorite facts (and rumors) from our dramaturgy research into the real life Hammond, the most interesting woman you’ve probably never heard of:
- At 10 years old, she wanted to donate all of her Christmas gifts to WWI orphans in Europe, inspiring her parents to create the War Children’s Christmas Fund.
- Her social circle included notable actresses like Tallulah Bankhead, Marlene Dietrich, Alla Nazimova, and Marguerite Namara.
- She was a crack rifle shot and liked to cruise around New York in a yellow convertible sports car.
- She was a direct descendent of Charlemagne and Mary Queen of Scots, and her godfather was President William Howard Taft.
- She was once sued for $100,000 by a broadway actor who accused her of stealing the affections of his wife.
- There was a rumor that she once attended a social function for a Russian duchess wearing a pair of slippers stained with the blood of a French aristocrat who perished in the Reign of Terror.

Come meet the incomparable Natalie Hays Hammond during Daemonologie: Signals & Sirens! There are just FIVE tickets left for the final two performances, Fri Nov 1 and Sat Nov 2 at 7:30pm. Get them at signalsandsirens.eventbrite.com.

Thomas Story has noticed some changes to the harbor lately. Although he can remember many damaging storms, like Hurricane Dog in 1950, he suspects it is now something different out there in the deep. Come listen to his stories of the sea and decide for yourself if there might be something lurking in Salem Harbor...

While Intramersive usually speculates about the past, Daemonologie: Signals & Sirens also draws inspiration from an existential threat faced by today and tomorrow: climate change. Rising sea levels and storm surge flooding present significant challenges to the stewardship of the historic campus and buildings. The House of the Seven Gables has spent the past two years conducting an assessment and planning project supported by a Coastal Zone Management grant. Visit 7gables.org/climate-resiliency (link in bio) to read more about what the future may hold for the Gables and the Derby Street neighborhood of Salem.

Salem in 1952: the Naumkeag Steam Cotton Company was on the verge of closing the Pequot Mills after over a century of operation, resulting in the loss of more than 800 jobs.

By the mid-nineteenth century, Salem was evolving from a maritime powerhouse into an industrial center. Waves of Polish, Italian, Russian, and French-Canadian immigrants moved into the city to work in the tanneries and textile mills. In 1847, the Naumkeag Steam Cotton Company opened one of the first and largest steam-powered mills in the country to manufacture Pequot cotton sheets and pillowcases. Positioned on Salem’s harbor, the Pequot Mills was not far from The House of the Seven Gables and its Settlement house that served many of the mill’s immigrant work force. Often, several generations of a family would all be going to work in the mill, which was Salem’s largest employer for much of its operation. Despite considerable success for about a century, the decline of industry and the post-war economy lead to the Naumkeag Company closing the Salem mill in 1953.

For the characters of Signals & Sirens, the mill is still in operation, but are whispers of the coming changes already on the air? Don’t miss your chance to immerse yourself in the world of Daemonologie: Signals & Sirens. Tickets are selling fast at signalsandsirens.eventbrite.com!

Nell Johnson grew up in the Settlement program, participating in classes and clubs while her parents worked long hours in the nearby textile mill. Although her mother would have preferred she focus on more "ladylike" activities like sewing and cooking, a younger Nell was drawn to the Young Mariners' Club, where she quickly excelled at chanty singing and telling tall tales. During the war, she dedicated her budding Mariner skills to watching the harbor for spy submarines, studying Morse code, and listening for possible enemy radio communications. Now that she's a young adult, Nell is hoping her knowledge and passion for radio technology can help her create a future beyond Salem's mills and factories. Agata and Maria couldn't be more proud of this shining star and have encouraged Nell to lead her own radio club here at Settlement.

Come meet Nell and ask her how her studies for her Amateur Radio license are going.
