All in days (ok two days) work. Stripped down 1967 Airstream Safari 22'

Our clients came to us with a gorgeous vision for this trailer and we cannot wait to see it come together. We are keeping the original layout and many of the original fixtures, but we'll be updating all of the systems and giving it a fresh modern look.

We are also in the middle of restoring a 1966 Airstream Sovereign 30'. It's been really interesting working simultaneously on trailers that are similar in so many ways, but with such a vast difference in size.

1969 Cardinal finished product after a complete rebuild. All new wood framing in the walls, cieling and subfloor, with updated wiring, insulation and plumbing. Marmoluem flooring and retro boomerang laminate. The fold down bunk and dinette feature new marine vinyl cushions from the amazing . We used the original cabinetry with a few small modifications. Amber shellac finish on both the new and original wood. Vintage stove from our own collection. I am obsessed with this little beauty!

1969 Cardinal Demo + Rebuilt frame, subfloor, aluminum belly, and walls.

This adorable little trailer came to us looking more or less intact and original. Upon closer inspection we discovered many previous attempts to patch the subfloor and cover holes in the walls. Once the skins were removed it became clear that much of the original framing had rotted to the extent that it crumbled if touched. Luckily between what remained of the framing, and the skins themselves, we were able to piece together entirely new framing and walls. The subfloor and wood ladder frame below are treated with Red Gard waterproofing membrane and we installed a new aluminum belly underneath, in addition to foam insulation. The floor is now fully protected from the elements and better insulated than it was from the factory. We cannot wait to put this beauty all back together!

We didn't realize when we started removing the interior of this 1969 Cardinal, that the walls had been overlayed with new wood panels. Upon removing the panels we found this hidden vintage Raggedy Ann wallpaper. Is it just me, or is there something a bit disturbing about her? 🤡

Before & After Airlight shell restoration.

Due to excessive damage, poor quality previous repairs, and the use of an oversized modern steel widow, we opted to replace all of the skins on the streetside both inside and out. We replaced the steel window with a vintage Hehr, and added additional support inside the walls. All of this in addition to the standard frame repair which included new outriggers and a treatment of Por 15, subfloor replacement, new insulation, new wiring, flooring and custom tanks. Now this beauty is structurally sound and ready for owners to install the new interior and shine her up. This was a very fun project for us and we cannot wait to see this rare classic back on the road.

It's panel replacement day for the '55 Airlight! We're replacing the entire streetside from dome to dome which means two 4' x 14' sections (aka a ridiculous amount of buck rivets! 🙃)

I'm looking forward to posting the before & afters on this though!

I promise we haven't forgotten how to use social media. Here's what we've been working on (and forgetting to post about)! There's some finish work and a shelf or two that need building, but the Bambi II is almost ready to go. Especially now that we received the cushions from today!

Airlight trailers were only made for 2 years- 1955 & 1956 - but we've been lucky enough to have two of these rare beauties in our shop within the last 6 months! The current Airlight project is breaking some records here at Wayward. The first record being the most layers of flooring we've ever seen in a trailer. The original subfloor and linoleum were intact, with a a layer of OSB laid on top, followed by a layer of flooring, then a layer of fiberboard and two consecutive vinyl floorings! The second record is the most "inventive" tail light solution. Yes, those are shelf brackets! They were wedged between the frame and subfloor below the banana wrap. Gotta admire a trailer that's been so well loved! (aka used & abused).

We don't tend to work on "new" trailers often, but we do make an exception for Airstreams! This 2012 Flying cloud came to us with some impressive floor rot due to a leaky water heater (and a little bit at the rear package tray as expected). The original vinyl floor was only stapled around the edges, so water was able to get underneath and wreak havoc without being noticable to the owners. We patched the subfloor, adding extra insulation as we went) and installed the new flooring, gluing it down this time to keep moisture out.
