Cinema Salem is an independent three-screen movie theater in Salem, Mass. Prior to that, a succession of other cinemas occupied the same space. Many North Shore folks recall seeing movies here over the years -- from blockbusters to arthouse fare to cheapo dollar-a-ticket shows. In March 2020 Cinema Salem closed its doors amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Fourteen months later, the cinema is reopening on

Friday, June 4 under new leadership with a new vision. We’re eager to get back to showing the kind of movies you've always enjoyed here. We'll also be presenting exciting discoveries from cinema's rich history and more recent gems off the beaten path. In addition, we look forward to an expanded menu of live performances and events

We are delighted to host the Cambridge (UK) American Stage Tour’s live performance of Shakespeare’s King Lear. This is the third year we've been a stop on the company's annual U.S. tour. Just two shows: Friday, September 25th at 7pm and Saturday, September 26th at 1pm. Head to cinemasalem.com coming soon page for tickets and more info.

The aging King Lear decides to divide his kingdom among his three daughters, allotting each a portion in proportion to the eloquence of her declaration of love. The hypocritical Goneril and Regan make grand pronouncements and are rewarded; Cordelia, the youngest daughter, who truly loves Lear, refuses to make an insincere speech to prove her love and is disinherited. The two older sisters mock Lear and renege on their promise to support him. Cast out, the king slips into madness and wanders about accompanied by his faithful Fool. Cordelia, having married the king of France, is obliged to invade her native country with a French army in order to rescue her neglected father.

There will be a 15 minute intermission.
