Finished up the colors on this carving. Prettymuch done now, just struggling to figure out weatherproofing (the joys of being self-taught).

The goal was to represent all wildlife, aerial, terrestrial, and (semi)aquatic. It also happens to feature a few of my favorite animals, barred owls and beavers especially.
Really enjoyed getting to work on a piece this size. Looking forward to doing many more carvings!

Personal projects can sometimes take a long hiatus (or several) before completion. It can happen because of a loss of confidence or direction and eventually loss of passion. This isn't uncommon for me but here's 2 of the oldest projects I have currently waiting patiently. Both projects began in 2018. I do plan on finishing both... eventually.

Anyone else with 8 year unfinished projects?

A recent small wood burning. No reference, just an imagined scene where I'd like to walk. As always, inspired by the views of New Hampshire.

P.s. I'm always down to do a landscape commission! I'd love to do something like this on a larger scale, maybe with a home or cottage among the foliage.

Two new greeting cards available today at the Haverhill Art Walk. Perfect for sending to a pet parent or framing on the wall! These prints came out so good, the photos can't do them justice.

Salem Life's reporter, Pat Bruno, has written a wonderful article on the Greater Salem Artists Association's plein air painting session there last month. You can pick up free copies of the paper at many locations in and around Salem.

A collection of portraits from Greater Haverhill Arts Association workshops!

From saturday's Greater Haverhill Arts Association artist workshop.

I absolutely love drawing from life.

I love how the model's expression can change throughout the sitting. It's not a quick smile like taking a picture, it's a long meditation. So much emotion and personality can be portrayed through a face at rest.

It's interesting to see how the model behaves. Some people can't help but fidget, while others sit like a stone long after their legs have fallen asleep.
The challenge of drawing a living, moving subject is a huge part of the enjoyment.

This might not produce a "better" drawing than if done from a photo reference, but the process really helps put me in the artist mindset.
