The Distance We Carry

There are sacrifices nobody sees when you become an immigrant.

I left Cuba to build a different life, but leaving meant leaving pieces of myself behind.

I left my son when he was only seven years old.

Today, he is eleven.

Four years of birthdays, milestones, ordinary afternoons, missed hugs, conversations through a screen, and moments I can never get back.

And while I built a new life here, my mother remained in Cuba — living through the difficult reality that so many Cuban families continue to face, carrying the weight of an economic system that has made everyday life a constant struggle.

So when people see an immigrant starting over, they often see courage.

What they don’t always see is the grief that comes with it.

The people you miss.
The moments you lose.
The guilt of being far away.
The fear of not being there when someone needs you.
The strange feeling of building a future while part of your heart is still somewhere else.

These photographs are not simply pictures of a father and his son embracing.

They represent an embrace that distance has taken from us — and one that I have carried inside me for years.

My art has always been a way of processing memory, identity, displacement, longing, and belonging. The more I live this journey, the more I understand that my work is not only about what I see.

It is about what I carry.

My son.
My mother.
Cuba.
The life I left behind.
And the life I am still trying to build.

I believe art can preserve what distance cannot.

It can give form to memories.
It can hold grief.
It can transform absence into something tangible.

And perhaps that is why I create.

Because some stories are too important to disappear.

To everyone who has ever left someone they love behind in order to create a different future: I see you.

And to my son and my mother — no matter how many miles separate us, you are present in my life, in my memories, and in every piece of art I create.

Some distances change us.
Some sacrifices become part of our art.
And some loves survive them all. 🤍

TEMPEST — A Commission

Tempest began as an exploration of movement, emotion, and the invisible forces that shape us. For this commission, I revisited that original language and created a new interpretation of the piece, allowing the work to become something personal while remaining connected to the spirit of the original.

Through layers, textures, lines, and mixed-media elements, the surface becomes a reflection of turbulence—not only as something destructive, but as a force capable of transformation.

This commission is a reminder that every interpretation carries its own story.

Swipe through to see the piece, the concept behind it, and some of the details that reveal its texture and character.

Dreams

A reflection on the space between who we are and who we are becoming.

In this piece, the human face merges with the sunflower—two symbols of identity, growth, and transformation becoming one. The blue and yellow tones speak to the tension between introspection and light, between the inner world and the possibility of becoming something new.

Created in mixed media with acrylic and oil on canvas, Dreamens explores the idea that our dreams are not separate from who we are—they are part of the process of becoming.

A piece about identity, transformation, and the dreams we carry within.

Dreamens — available for collectors.
