ArtsXchange St Pete

ArtsXchange St Pete The ArtsXchange is the primary project of the Warehouse Arts District Association.

The ArtsXchange is 28 affordable artist studios, a gallery and an educational space within the skin of an existing industrial building. The nearly three-acre property was acquired in 2014 by the Warehouse Arts District Association, a 501(c)3. Through public and private contributions, and over several phases, the WADA’s goal is to create affordable space for a variety of artists who might otherwise

be priced out of the rapidly developing creative corridor. Doing so ensures that artists can continue to work in the district and contribute to the city’s overall economy.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Artist’s dystopian tableau lights up the warehouse arts district
Found-object sculptor provides a close-up look during artist’s downtown street museum
ST. PETERSBURG, FL - Artist Hinger strikes again with his post-apocalyptic installation ‘Wasteland’ currently housed in a former 1922 jazz club at the edge of the Warehouse Arts District. This weekend, select life-size pieces from the exhibition will be on the street at the intersection of Central and 5th St S. for viewing and interaction.
After dark, the illuminated tableaux’s red glow can be seen from the historic building a quarter mile away. At closer proximity, ‘Wastelanders’ can be seen peering out of the second story windows. This Saturday, the vibrant life-size sculptures will mingle among pedestrians in downtown St. Petersburg.
Hinger creates his sculptures by assembling discarded items, and recycling them into bright vivid pieces that draw viewers close. “ I enjoy watching people’s reactions as they interact with the art,, many even taking selfies with the sculptures” says Hinger.
At a time when climate change is an urgent concern, ‘Wasteland’ depicts a dystopian future of life among discarded items in an environmentally degraded landscape. “I imagine the viewer seeing themselves as a ‘Wastelander’,” states Hinger, “and hope they will be moved to question current attitudes and societal behaviors”. There are 30 “Wasteland” sculptures currently at 2826 Fairfield Ave, an installation which can be partially seen from the outside, and can be fully viewed by appointment.
ABOUT WASTELAND
‘Wasteland’ is a showcase of Hinger’s large free-standing sculptures that illuminates his original manifesto “Post-Apocalyptic Visions’, based on Hinger’s social rage and belief that human greed and selfishness, injustice among people, and the reckless treatment of the environment are leading to world devastation. The tableaux portray the results of our wasteful and destructive nature as humans. With subtle social and political commentary, ‘Wasteland’ communicates an urgent visual statement about our future, and draws viewers in to a world of human misery, resignation, and forced innovation.
ABOUT ARTIST
Richard J. Hinger conceived his ideas for his initial visionary art pieces while living on the coast of Southern California. There, he forged his own technique and distinctive style, and quickly gained attention for his provocative works made from discarded and recycled items. Early in his career, Hinger also enjoyed working on public art projects he developed with at-risk youth and homeless teens, and as a result founded E.S.I Arts, a non-profit community arts program bringing utilitarian art to cities’ public spaces. Hinger has been a significant and prolific artist for over 30 years, and has an expansive body of work. Referred to as “fossilized stories of the future”, his pieces reflect current social, political, and environmental issues, and frequently transport the viewer into a dystopian destiny.
