We had a wonderful opening reception tonight. Don’t worry, if you were unable to attend, the show will be up until the end of October.

For this year’s annual Halloween season Call for Art, The Werk Gallery has asked artists from the community to submit artworks inspired by the theme “Memento Mori”. Originating in ancient Rome as a reminder to the emperor of his own mortality during victory parades, memento mori is Latin for “remember you will die”.

Over the centuries the concept was incorporated into art objects that not only reminded viewers and patrons of their mortality but also inspired one towards gratitude for the life they’ve been given. These objects would include visual elements of death like skulls alongside elements of life like fruit or flowers to create this contrast and point of reflection.

The Werk Gallery is excited to see what our local artists are reflecting upon in a contemporary world full of both beauty and fear.

Our October exhibit Memento Mori, meaning “remember you must die” in Latin, opens this Friday with a reception from 5-9pm. If you don’t like crowds you can come in for early viewing from 12-5pm. Plenty of parking behind the gallery.

In honor of our most dearly departed friends, family, & pets we will be building a memorial shrine that will be on display all month with the show. You can bring a photo or a favorite flower or a note to leave. I also have a link in the email below where you can submit photos and I will print and place them myself before the show.
