In the current edition of The Artisan Magazine, Executive Director Markus Gottschlich shares thoughts on arts advocacy:

By Markus Gottschlich At its essence, advocacy is the art of speaking for those who cannot. It requires not just a voice but a commitment—unyielding and immediate. There is no luxury of time to ponder when the moment arrives; response is paramount, as any EMT will tell you, for inaction can be fat...

WADA’s efforts to advocate on behalf of artists and non-profits has continued, and St. Pete city council members have heard our demands for more arts funding after the August 3 council meeting where six members from stood up and spoke about the need to increase funding to the arts.

Here are the highlights from the funding plan put forth by Gina Driscoll and other council members to help reduce the monetary gap created by Governor Desantis:

$500K will be allocated from the CURRENT general fund balance to offset some of the Governor’s vetoes or increase the Arts Grants & Aid amount. Before: $550K After: $1,050,000

Arts Grants to Individual Artists will be increased by $200K in FY25, an increase from $50K.
Before: $50K After: $250K

The plan put forth still needs to be finalized through the budget public hearings in September, and we urge for this budget plan to be approved as soon as possible. We thank Gina Driscoll and the entire council for their unwavering support for the arts in our city, and we hope to have good news come October.

Since St. Petersburg likes to call itself a “City of the Arts,” it’s only fitting that its homegrown arts community, which generates a serious economic impact, gets a decent return on the blood, sweat, tears and talents of its labors. This was the opinion espoused by sculptor Mark Aeling at Tu...

Unfortunately we have to announce that the ArtsXchange's main galleries (Tully-Levine and Burka Member Lounge) will be closed for the August 10th ArtWalk in response to the Governor's funding cut to the arts. This is the FIRST TIME in 9 years of participating in Second Saturdays ArtWalk that we'll have to close and not offer free, curated art exhibits and experiences. Being able to offer free programs for the community is based on subsidies.

While WADA's galleries will be closed, individual studios and campus businesses have opening hours on that day as well as throughout the month.

We need your support, just like so many other, local arts nonprofits: https://gofund.me/4d9bbfba

Warehouse Arts District

The Warehouse Arts District is a cultural destination for the arts that spans from 1st Avenue North to 10th Avenue South and 16th Street to 31st Street, including the Deuces Live Main Street, in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida. Comprised of a thriving community of over 300 artists, businesses and organizations, we feature creative, highly curated art within the district and employ a broad spectrum of tools to support the success of the artists and the community.

Home to the ArtsXchange, an artistic enclave with over 50,000 square feet of warehouse space that is being renovated into affordable working studios, galleries, classrooms, and performance space, the Warehouse Arts District is open to the public on the Second Saturday of every month with most spaces doubling as galleries open to the public.

“Our vision is to create a community that will attract artists from all over the country to live and work here”

The Warehouse Arts District Association (WADA) is a member-basedorganization. Please become a WADA member today and support the arts in Downtown St. Pete! https://www.warehouseartsdistrictstpete.org
