Art sucks (if you can't enjoy it)
Navigating the art world can be tough.
Have you ever attended an exhibit and felt:
excluded,
bored,
uncomfortable,
empty,
disinterested,
unchallenged,
unchanged,
uninspired,
even cheated?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, you might be starting to realize something.
How can art enrich your life?
It might seem like a simple question, but it's also the most direct. And direct questions like these should not be overlooked.
I hate to say it, but it all starts with you.
Art can only enrich your life if you are actively trying to enhance your human experience.
Are you giving enough space to art in your life?
Are you seeking beauty?
Are you attending concerts, theatrical performances, or reading books?
Nothing can communicate with you, with your soul, if you don't leave a door open.
How can I talk to you about aesthetics if you are not willing to seek out beauty?
But the good news is, if you're reading this, you probably are. This is the most important premise: you must be in search of beauty.
You want to be inspired. You're giving art a chance to touch your heart.
Art can only illuminate you if you leave a crack open.
Read a book, listen to some music, go to an exhibition. Let yourself be inspired.
We artists will take it from there.
As you begin to open up to art, it will become increasingly easier to recognize what is intellectually brilliant and what is merely superficial.
When you decide to let yourself be inspired, you’ll discover (and I’m sure it has already happened to you) that art has the power to immensely enrich your life.
And the next time you go to an exhibit, you’ll be like a child on Christmas Day!
Art is for you. The best thing you can do is educate yourself about beauty.
