from artist to icon ⭐

On Dec 14, 1936, Salvador Dalí appeared on the cover of TIME magazine. The cover introduced Dalí—and Surrealism itself—to a wider audience, transforming him from a celebrated artist into an international celebrity.

This was the start of Dalí’s rise to fame, a journey that continued during his years in the U.S., where he cultivated the larger-than-life persona that made him a global icon.

See this historic cover on view in our limited-time exhibition ‘Dalí in America’ and discover how America helped shape the legend of Dalí.

then ➡️ now ✨

As we wrap up the first week of our 2026 Junior Docent program, we're taking a look back.

8 years ago, these twin campers spent their summer discovering Dalí's imaginative world and finding their own voice in the galleries. This summer, they're back at The Dalí as volunteers, helping support the next generation of Junior Docents.

Some journeys have a way of coming full circle. 🌀

golden hues ✨

For Dalí, yellow flows through landscapes and figures alike—shaping light, softening edges and turning the visible world into something that feels just out of reach.

the art of disguise 👁️

Salvador Dalí's iconic mustache was more than a style statement, it was an extension of the persona he carefully crafted. While the world fixated on his unmistakable appearance, Dalí remained free to dream, experiment and create without limits.

What might emerge if your imagination felt free to wander?

These three figures on a beach are only the beginning of the story, as Dalí’s world moves between myth and illusion.

♊ gemini ♊

Curious. Playful. Ever-changing.

Happy Gemini season. ✨

In this work, Dalí depicts the zodiac twins as a symbol of duality—two figures mirroring and responding to one another in a balance of energy and identity. Playful yet layered, the work invites you to look twice, and then look again. 👁️

new worlds, new visions 👁️

Both “Surrealist Poster” (first image) and “The Discovery of America by Christopher Columbus” (second image) reflect Salvador Dalí’s evolving relationship with the United States.

The first, created upon Dalí’s arrival in America, was designed to introduce his Surrealist ideas to a new audience discovering his bold and imaginative vision for the first time.

The second, painted decades later, becomes a dreamlike reflection on that journey itself, with Dalí identifying with Columbus and mythologizing his own arrival into a “New World” of artistic success.

Together, the works trace Dalí’s transformation from an arriving provocateur to an artist reshaping his own legacy through the lens of America.

See these works on view & learn more about Dalí’s time in the U.S. when you visit our special exhibit, “Dalí in America.”
