The St. Pete History Museum announced a new exhibit this week showcasing a curated collection of local structures that, while still standing, are widely expected to become historical artifacts in the near future.
The exhibit features photographs of buildings from across the city, each accompanied by detailed placards outlining their current status, including “under review,” “variance requested,” and “demolition pending.” Museum officials described the collection as a proactive effort to document St. Petersburg’s evolving landscape before it becomes significantly more awesome.
“We realized there was a gap in our historical record,” one curator explained. “By the time something qualifies as history, it’s often already gone. This allows visitors to experience that loss in real time.”
According to staff, the exhibit will be updated regularly to reflect new additions, removals, and approvals, with several pieces already marked as “limited-time viewings.” One display notes that a featured structure is expected to transition into history “pending final approval, which is expected shortly.”
Visitors are encouraged to move quickly through the gallery, as some exhibits may no longer be on display by the time they reach the end.
