More plein air fun on the Vineyard, right in our back yard. Temperatures are in the mid 70s and I’m in heaven!
Hello from Martha’s Vineyard! I’m so excited to be out of the oppressive Florida heat and able to paint outside again! Here’s my first effort, getting warmed up in my friend’s yard before I venture out around the island.
Skimmers! This painting is included in “Made Here,” a new exhibit of works by Arts Xchange studio artists. The show opens tonight during Art Walk in the Tully Levine Gallery, 515 22nd St S.
“Flight,” 36x36 oil on canvas
SOLD! I’m so pleased this one has gone home with a local collector. Thanks for making it happen!
Making progress!
Work in progress—a new 36x36 orange tree. I started by blocking in some general shapes with a transparent wash, and now I’m working my way through the painting, one section at a time. Trying to stay loose and not lose track of my value pattern. I’ve got a long way to go, but I like where this is headed so far!
I went back in to this plein air painting and enhanced it with a little (ok a lot) more Bougainvilla and a dappled shadow on the ground.
“Beyond the Blue Door,” 8x10.
Come play with color with me on Saturday! I’ll be teaching an ArtsXploration class right here at the Arts Xchange. We’ll talk about the properties of color and have some fun with color mixing and painting. We’ll be using water mixable oil paint, so if you’re curious about this medium, this is a good chance to try it out.
Class is from 11:12:30 on Saturday May 6th. There’s no cost to attend, but you do have to sign up at the website. I’ve put a link to the registration page in my bio.
This is the last weekend to see my featured artist show at Brenda McMahon Gallery in Gulfport.
I created this painting on-site for last year’s Gulfport In Plein Sight event, and It’s also in the current show. It took two sessions. The second photo shows you how bright and sunny it was on the first day. I knew right away I was going to call this one “On the Sunny Side of the Street.” But when I went back a day later (third photo) there was no sun at all! It’s a good thing I’d already figured out the light and shadow patterns. And I was thrilled when the painting won an award!
is open every day but Monday. Weekend hours are 11-7 on Friday and Saturday and 11-4 on Sunday. Follow the link in my bio to see this piece and the rest of my show online.
Detail shots of “Meet Me at the Beach.” I loved how this painting came together. The looseness is something I often aim for but don’t always achieve. Plus, what could be happier than a bunch of colorful beach umbrellas on a sunny day?
This painting is available at Brenda McMahon Gallery, where I’m featured artist of the month til the end of April. it’s also available online—I’ll put a link in the comments, and there’s aLao a link in my bio.
Thanks to Brenda McMahon Gallery and Jila Davoodi and congratulations to the new owners of this painting!
I’m finally coming up for air after a busy weekend, and I just wanted to say what an honor and a pleasure it was to be the judge for this year’s In Plein Sight event. I was blown away by the quality of paintings submitted for the show and the dedication of the artists. I wish I’d had more awards to give!!!
Thanks to all the artists who participated and who joined me for my class on the beach Friday morning. I loved having you as students for the day!
Thanks also to the Gulfport Merchants Chamber of Commerce and Aimee Costa for organizing an event for us plein air painters. And thanks to Brenda McMahon for your support of the event and for featuring my paintings at Brenda McMahon Gallery this month.
I’m already looking forward to being a participating painter for In Plein Sight 2024!
One morning I met my Plein Air Class at the beach in Gulfport, and the scene was so calm and foggy and there were incredible pinky yellow colors in the sky. I tried to capture it in a sketch on site, but then painted this one from a photograph, the sketch, and my memory.
"Moody Morning" is in my featured artist show at Brenda McMahon Gallery in Gulfport. Opening reception is Tomorrow, Friday April 7th from 6-9 pm. Tomorrow is also Gulfport's First Friday Art Walk along Beach Boulevard.
This is one of the paintings in my featured artist exhibit this month in Gulfport. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to show my paintings in such a lovely space in a great town.
I’ll be at the gallery this Friday the 7th for the opening reception from 6-9 pm. It’s also Gulfport’s First Friday ArtWalk. Hope to see you there!
“Meet Me At the Beach,” 11x14 oil on linen panel.
These big, sociable fellows are headed to Brenda McMahon Gallery in Gulfport, where I’m featured guest artist for the month of April. The show opens April 1st, and it will be up all month.
White pelicans are migratory. We only see them in the winter, they hang out in big packs callled squadrons, and they’re much bigger than the iconic brown pelicans. For all these reasons, they’re one of my favorite birds.
I took the reference photo for this painting at Fort DeSoto. The pelicans were resting on a sandbar off of Shell Key, which you can only get to by boat. So I put my camera in a plastic bag and kayaked over, stopping as close as I could without disturbing the birds. It is, in fact, hard to take pictures from a kayak because the boat doesn’t hold still!
“Sunshine Squadron” is 18x36 inches, oil on gallery wrapped canvas.
Two thumbs up for a lovely morning with the Gulfport Plein Air Painters! This town couldn’t get any more charming and friendly!
Local artist friends, there’s still time to sign up for Gulfport’s annual In Plein Sight plein air event, which starts next week and culminates on April 7th. I’ll drop a link in the comments for more info and to sign up.
Plein air friends, I’d love to see you at this fun plein air event!
I just dropped off this painting at the Sustainability and Resiliance show which opens Saturday in the Tully Levine Gallery at the Arts Xchange.
Cresting this brought up so many thoughts and memories for me. I’m thrilled to have it in an art show that may spark more dialogue about what it means to be sustainable and how we can create more sustainable communities.
As some of you remember, when we lived in Ohio Jim and I were lucky enough to be involved with Simply Living and Sustainable Worthington. While Simply Living educated us about sustainability, Sustainable Worthington was all about taking action in our suburban town. Looking back, I can hardly believe how much we accomplished in a short time—a winter farmers market, a dedicated market volunteer group, community garden, precycle day, cool new bike racks, and putting sustainability at the forefront of leaders’ minds when new development projects were proposed. And I’m almost certainly leaving things out.
So on the surface, my painting is about personal choices that support local businesses, help the environment and contribute to a vibrant and resilient local food shed. But for me the market will always be a reminder of the way a group of people with a common goal can make a real difference in their community.
Ok I’m done now 🙂. If you’re here in St Pete come see the show, which opens during Second Saturday Art Walk, 5-9 pm, 515 22nd St S. And come by my studio next to the gallery and say hi!
So I was kayaking at Coffee Pot, and as I was finishing up I saw this incredible boat getting ready to launch. It looked like something out of a story book.
“Magical Afternoon,” 11x14 oil on panel, will make its debut at Art Walk next Saturday March 11th, 5-9 pm. Come see it (and me) at the Arts Xchange, 515 22nd St S.
Getting ready for my class on movement and rhythm at the Arts Exchange on Saturday. The class is from 11-12:30 and there’s no charge, but you do have to sign up. Here’s the link: https://www.warehouseartsdistrictstpete.org/event-5103312
I wanted to do a larger painting (30x40) of a group of roseate spoonbills, but struggled to find the right photo reference. So I took a gazillion pictures of the same bird and got to teach me how to create a grouping in photoshop. I’ve resisted learning Photoshop for years, so I was glad to have a reason to dive into it!
I’m still on the lookout for a group these guys in the wild, so please DM me if you have a sighting!
Happy Valentines Day from me and this little roseate spoonbill.
“Shadow Dancer,” 8x10, available.
I had a ball doing some live wedding painting over the weekend. Rather than having me paint the wedding itself, the couple selected an image from their engagement photo shoot. The bold darks and checkerboard scarf made it really pop! Such a joy to paint this lovely couple, and the band was so good I was literally dancing around the canvas.
There’s still quite a bit for me to do, and I’m looking forward to diving back in to it in the studio later this week.
I finished up this little cottage I started as a demo for my Tuesday morning class. Our topic was keeping background darks thin and suggestive.
You can still join us! We paint outdoors on some days and other times we”re indoors at the Suntan Art Center. Sign up thorough .
SOLD! This feathered friend is flying off to a new home. Thanks to Alison West Brown Gallery for working your magic once again! “In the Pink,” 36x18 oil on canvas.
My painting “Delicious” has been selected for the Art for a Cause exhibit at DRV Gallery in Gulfport. I’m super excited to be part of this show because a portion of all art sales will be donated to charitable causes chosen by the individual artists.
Apples are a symbol of health and nutrition. The sale of this painting will support Feeding Tampa Bay, which works to relieve hunger and food insecurity throughout our region.
The show opens January 19th from 6-8 pm and runs through February 3rd. https://drvgallery.com/art-for-a-cause-exhibit

I do have some Christmas cards left…if you’d like one, message me with your address and I’ll send it your way 😊🎄
A plein air piece from a recent trip to Fort DeSoto with the Plein Air Colony of St Pete. I just love the sunlight on these lifeguard huts. "End of the Season," 8x10 oil on panel.
My father in law loves this painting because it reminds him of the school he attended when he was growing up in rural Wisconsin. “But,” he said, “It needs an outhouse.”
Hmmm….maybe?
This painting is from our summer van travels across the U.S. See it and other paintings of far-flung places at our open studio this Saturday, 5-9 pm .
Sunset palms, 20x20 inches. I did so many little 8x10 plein air paintings while we were traveling, I wasn’t sure how it would feel to paint something bigger in the studio.. But I had fun with all the colors!
Painting the beachy plants behind Suntan Art Center this morning. I’m gearing up for my Plein Air Adventures class which starts at Suntan next Tuesday.
