What happens when a sacred story is taken out of the hands of institutions and placed back into the hands of the people?

Tomorrow night in Sarasota, we gather for HUNKY JESUS — Jennifer M. Kroot’s documentary about the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence and the outrageous, tender, hilarious, deeply human tradition they created.

Beneath the makeup, crowns, humor and beautiful absurdity is something much deeper: decades of q***r community, activism, service, HIV/AIDS education, fundraising, resistance — and the belief that joy can itself be an act of survival.

Kroot’s film looks beyond the spectacle and into the people, history and humanity behind the Sisters.
