A Summer Pause 💔☀️🎭

Friends, I have some tough news to share: Opera on the Lake will be taking a pause this summer.

This decision was not easy—creating these shows with and for you has been an absolute dream. But financially, it’s just not feasible for us to produce a show this year, even on the tightest of shoestring budgets.

The good news? We’re not going anywhere. This is just a brief intermission. Plans are already in motion for a stronger return:
🎯 Forming an advisory board
📄 Applying for grants
📑 Registering as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit

All of this means we’ll be back—more resilient, more independent, and more ready than ever to bring our signature blend of artistry and fun to the lake.

In the meantime, keep supporting local arts! We’ll be highlighting summer performances featuring our OTL artists, so you can still catch their brilliance onstage 🎶

Did you know that Viennese music has a rich history dating back to the 18th century? From waltzes to operettas, it’s a treasure trove of melodies.

While it’s difficult to pinpoint the exact first piece of music labeled as “Viennese,” the Viennese Classical period, marked by composers such as Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Franz Schubert, is often credited with solidifying Vienna’s reputation as a major center of musical innovation.

One of the earliest and most significant pieces that contributed to Vienna’s musical identity is Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 1 in D major, written around 1759-1761. Haydn is often called the “father of the symphony,” and his works played a crucial role in establishing the Viennese Classical style.

Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro” (1786) and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 in C major (1800) are other early examples of works that are intrinsically linked to the Viennese musical tradition. These compositions and others from the Classical period laid the foundation for what would become known as the distinctive “Viennese” sound.

In the context of operetta and the “Viennese waltz,” Johann Strauss II’s works, such as “The Blue Danube” (1867), became emblematic of Viennese music in the 19th century. These pieces are often what people think of when they refer to “Viennese music” today.
