A 19-year-old Jimi Hendrix during his time in the 101st Airborne Division of the U.S. Army, 1961. In November 1961, fellow serviceman Billy Cox walked past an army club and heard Hendrix playing. Impressed by Hendrix's technique, which Cox described as a combination of "John Lee Ho**er and Beethoven", Cox borrowed a bass guitar and the two jammed. Within weeks, they began performing at base clubs on the weekends with other musicians in a loosely organized band, the Casuals. Billy Cox, later was a member of Hendrix’s Band of Gypsys and appeared with him at Woodstock.

REFLECTIONS | Exhibit by Roya Nazari Najafabadi | Artist Reception and Iranian Cultural Celebration

Please join us for the opening of a fabulous solo exhibition by Iranian-born artist Roya Nazari Najafabadi - and an Iranian Cultural Celebration featuring a slide show of travel photographs, taken in Iran in 1976, by Stephan F. Kistler Photography.

Roya Nazari Najafabadi's solo exhibition REFLECTIONS showcases recent paintings, photographs, and mixed media installations that call attention to the struggles and unwavering spirit of Iranian women in their quest for freedom.

Stephan F. Kistler's photographs capture glimpses of the beauty, architecture, artisanship, history, and street life of Iran a few years before the Revolution - and the spirit and incredible hospitably of the family he was able to visit and travel with in 1976.

Both the exhibition and the cultural celebration are co-produced and co-sponsored by ArT at 967 Payne and the Twin Cities Iranian Culture Festival. This project is funded in part by the Minnesota Humanities Center with money from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund that was created with the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008.

Take a break from politics and read something frivolous.

Bob Mackie is a renown fashion designer who made custom gowns for Cher, Carol Burnett and others. I watched both of those shows as a little girl just to see the pretty dresses they would wear at the beginning of the show.

But for me, Bob Mackie was the man who designed the most amazing showgirl costumes in Vegas. He designed most of the costumes for the longest running showgirl show called Jubilee. Prior to closing, I saw Jubilee several times and also got a back stage tour of the costumes and workspace. I was literally speechless throughout the tour. The headdresses were out of this world. The construction of them was fascinating to me.

So a few years ago when I ran across an original Bob Mackie dress I knew I had to buy it. I never wore it because no occasion was special enough.

Approximately one year ago, I heard that Dita Von Teese was going to have a show in residence at the famous Jubilee Theatre and was going to use some of the original costumes from the Jubilee Show. I knew that I was going to find a way to get to see that show.

Fast forward to June 5! I got to see Dita Las Vegas whilst wearing my own Bob Mackie dress. It was an absolute “pinch me” moment.

A few days after the show, I was looking something up about Bob Mackie and realized that my red dress is featured on the front and back of one of his books.

Little girl dreams sometimes do come true.

As we prepare to launch Season 3 of our independently produced TV show I took some time to reflect on my journey with the State's oldest Black newspaper, the Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder.

In light of Black history month I encourage you to support the Spokesman's 90th year of publishing by being intentional about reading and sharing their work daily.
