Sen. Franken Seeks Entrants to Poetry Contest for Minnesota’s Military Children
Theme of Contest will be "My Experience as a Military Child"

ST. PAUL, MN [3/8/13] — In recognition of the "Month of the Military Child" and "National Poetry Month" in April, U.S. Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) announced today that he is hosting his second annual poetry contest for children of military families in Minnesota.

"Being part of a military family isn’t easy," said Sen. Franken. "With this poetry contest, I hope to not only recognize the extraordinary work of men and women serving across the world, but also their children, who sacrifice so much for our country."

The contest is open to all children of military families in Minnesota grades K-12, with three age categories: Kindergarten to 6th grade; 7th to 9th grades, and 10th to 12th grades. This includes children who have parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, or uncles who are either active military or military veterans.

Top winners will be chosen in each age category. Those selected will receive an invitation to attend a reception at Sen. Franken’s St. Paul office. Guests include Sen. Franken and judges Minnesota Commissioner of Veterans Affairs Larry Shellito; Minnesota Poet Laureate Joyce Sutphen; Adjutant General of the Minnesota National Guard Major General Rick Nash; Minnesota Commissioner of Education Brenda Casellius; and University of Minnesota wrestler, Tom Giaimo, who is also a member of Air Force ROTC.

Top winning poems in each category will be framed and displayed in Sen. Franken’s offices in St. Paul or Washington, D.C. The overall winner will receive an autographed book by famed Minnesota author Garrison Keillor.

Participants may submit only one entry, with a maximum word count of 250 words. Each entry must include the name of the military child, the parent/guardian’s name, a phone number, and the name of the child’s school. Please also clearly indicate participant’s age category.
