🌊 Honored to be part of the screening of Carnival: They Can’t Steal Our Joy: a powerful film celebrating resilience, culture, and the joy that cannot be taken away.

Grateful that Aquarelle of Samba got to bring a little piece of Brazilian Carnaval to the stage after the film.

🌊My connection to Bahia doesn’t come from just one place, it was built over time, throughout my whole life.

It started at home, with my Baiana mother, but it grew with me: through travel, spirituality, food, music, family, and every experience I’ve lived along the way.

Samba de roda didn’t enter my body all at once it came layer by layer, like a watercolor.

Every turn I dance today carries a piece of all of that: my ancestry, my story, and everything I’ve built along the way.

Aquarelle of Samba was born from this journey: to honor that heritage and carry a little piece of Bahia wherever I go.

🌊Traje da Baiana 🌊

O traje da baiana é um dos maiores símbolos da cultura afro-brasileira, e cada peça conta uma história.
O turbante, a saia rodada e armada, a bata rendada, o pano da costa e os balangandãs reúnem herança de povos africanos como iorubás, haúçás e bantos, a influência portuguesa na saia e raízes árabe-islâmicas nos turbantes. Muitas peças ecoam o candomblé, o próprio turbante remete ao alaká, tecido sagrado africano.
Hoje em dia, a moda afro-baiana reinterpreta esses elementos como resistência e reconexão com a ancestralidade, e é por isso que, na dança e nos figurinos, a gente se inspira tanto nessas raízes.
O que mais te encanta no traje da baiana?

The Baiana dress is one of the greatest symbols of Afro-Brazilian culture and every piece tells a story.
The turban, the wide layered skirt, the lace-trimmed blouse, the pano da costa shawl and the balangandã charms blend heritage from African peoples like the Yoruba, Hausa and Bantu, Portuguese influence in the skirt, and Arab-Islamic roots in the turbans. Many pieces echo Candomblé, the turban itself recalls the alaká, a sacred African cloth.
Today, Afro-Bahian fashion reinterprets these elements as resistance and reconnection with ancestry, exactly why we draw so much inspiration from these roots in dance and costume design.
