We were proud to share the beauty and energy of Afro-Brazilian culture. Aquarelle of Samba had the honor of performing at EMUME 2026.

A lively celebration of the connection between dance, music, ancestry, and community.

🌊 Samba is Afro-Brazilian.

It carries African roots, Brazilian history, Indigenous presence, popular culture, rhythm, resistance, joy, and memory.

Across the African diaspora, movement traditions may share connections. Brazil, Cuba, the Caribbean, and other cultures can carry echoes of similar roots. Shared roots do not erase cultural specificity.

Afro-Brazilian dance has its own history, language, timing, musicality, and cultural context. Samba, samba no pé, samba de roda, samba afro, and other Brazilian forms come from a specific Brazilian experience shaped by African, Indigenous, and Portuguese influences.

I honor the connections.
I also honor the differences.

Aquarelle of Samba is a space for learning, respect, cultural memory, and artistic expression.

Meet Amira Boler.

Amira has been dancing samba for a little over a year. Her love and admiration for dance began while growing up around Igbo culture, where movement, rhythm, and community helped shape her connection to dance.

This year, Amira joins Aquarelle of Samba for ÉMÙMÉ 2026, bringing her curiosity, respect, and growing connection to Afro-Brazilian traditions.
Reflecting on ÉMUME and the connection to Brazil, Amira shares:

“The theme ‘When we dance, we remember’ is a beautiful reminder that dance has often been a form of resistance. Samba, like capoeira, carries stories of strength, survival, and response to oppression and unjust laws.

When I dance, I try to remember the stories held in each dance and honor those who danced it before me.”

Aquarelle of Samba is proud to share this space alongside her.

Meet Julien Akwa.

Julien is an all-styles dancer rooted in hip hop, krump, breaking, popping, and freestyle movement.

For Julien, ÉMUME 2026 is more than a performance. It is a space for connection through rhythm, culture, and shared energy.

“With family roots in Cameroon, I find deep inspiration in Brazilian and Afro-diasporic traditions. Through samba, capoeira, and music, I continue to explore movement as a bridge between community, ancestry, and self-expression.

This journey is about growth, exchange, and celebrating the stories we carry in our bodies through dance.”
