Story City

Story City Story City is a live storytelling event based in the Twin Cities. Story City is a migrating, live storytelling event in the Twin Cities.

Story City promotes the oral tradition, self-expression and stories of the cities we love through live memoir. Each event has a different theme, and storytellers have up to 7 minutes to recount their tale live on stage without the aid of notes. Story City events are held in a different space each time, so no two are alike. Started in 2012 by Jemma Brown and Lara Avery, the goal of Story City is to

provide a platform for artists, performers, writers and everyone in between to come together once a month and share stories with members of their Twin Cities community. We're always on the lookout for new voices and venues! To participate or collaborate, or for the latest on what we're doing and where we'll be, email us at [email protected] and follow us on twitter:

Hello Twin Cities,

How are you? Here's the deal: I've got a couple of hard deadlines coming up. Plus, I need to write a grant report.

Story City is going to take a short break over the holidays. But! We'll be back in January in a cool place, with cool people, and hopefully, a reboot of the podcast. Woohoo!

If you have any questions in the meantime, email me at [email protected].

Love,
Lara

The 1970's saw glam rock, a recession, and the invention of the slinky. What do you remember? What do you have that time travels you there?

Submit 2-3 sentences about your stories/objects from the Golden Years by September 26 to Christina Chang at [email protected].

If selected, you will not only tell your story at the event on October 3, your object will also be installed by Mary Bergs as a co-exhibition of The Studio Sessions.

In the meantime, mark your calendar for next Thursday at 6:30 pm, where we will drink wine, take in the gorgeous installments and photography, and swap stories.

Were you alive in the 1970's? Do you wish you were? We're teaming up with the Minnesota Museum of American Art to celebrate the Golden Years through stories, objects, and the found art of Mary Bergs.

This month, we want your stories, but we also want the stuff that inspired them (think the shirt you went all the way in at the 1974 Stones concert, the statue on your grandmother's mantle you broke in 1979 and glued back together, or, if you're my age, the 1970's caftan you found at a vintage store and spilled wine on, alone).

Join us on 10/3 at 6:30 for free wine and beer at the MMAA gallery in Lowertown Saint Paul's beautiful Pioneer Press building. Submissions are little different this month:

To tell your true 1970's-inspired tale, submit 2-3 sentences about your story and the memorabilia involved by September 26 to Christina Chang at [email protected]. If selected, you will not only tell your story at the event on October 3, your object will also be installed by Mary Bergs as a co-exhibition of The Studio Sessions! Sweet!

In the meantime, check out the beautiful space:

BREAKING: Thanks for sticking with us as we transition into fall! As usual, we're flying by the seat of our pants, and we've got some more updates for you:

Due to mystical complications involving a backyard and the balsamic moon, September's event, FAMILY SECRETS, has been postponed. All submissions will be saved and considered for November, when FAMILY SECRETS will now take place.

Now, let us dive into October. It's a Saint Paul month, people, and we're trying something a little different. We're excited to bring you TWO shows, both taking place in beautiful downtown.

10/3--We collaborate with the Minnesota Museum of American Art for a 1970's "Show and Tell" at the opening of an exhibition by artist Mary Bergs, whose practice explores our relationship to objects.

Add your take to the cultural memory of the 1970s by telling the story of an object that represents the 1970s to you in 7 minutes or less. Then, bring that object with you to the show!

For those who lived through the 1970s, that object may grace mantels or lay buried in the backs of closets. For those who weren’t born yet or are too young to remember, the decade lives in vintage store gems and pop-cultural references.

Check out the link below for more info on how to submit.

10/24--Story City and the Minnesota Book Awards present LOST. Have you ever found yourself out of familiar territory? Forgotten where you came from or where you're going? Tell us about it! We're looking for storytellers (anyone from professionals to barstool soothsayers) to share the Story City stage with local authors.

To submit, send a few sentences about a true "lost" story from your life to [email protected] by 9/26. In the meantime, get ready to lose yourself (in a good way) to a night of stories, a celebration of Minnesota authors, and plenty of toasts to being found.

This will take place at the lovely Black Dog Cafe. Happy Hour beforehand, and music by jazz trio Bookhouse.

It's going to be great month. In the meantime, submit! And mark your calendar for these sweet shows.

Love,
Story City

Join us for a unique presentation of Show and Tell with Story City, which runs live storytelling events, and local artist Mary Bergs, whose practice explores our relationship to objects. BREAKING: Here are your top news stories from the great, thriving metropolis of Story City! (Not the actual town in Iowa.)

In the tradition of secrets, the location and time of FAMILY SECRETS is still exactly that: a secret. But it's in the works.

In the meantime, get your family secrets (a few sentences will do) to [email protected].

We've also got BIG Saint Paul plans for October, in the form of not one but TWO events, with TWO great organizations: The Minnesota Book Awards, and Minnesota Museum of American Art. Keep your eyes peeled.

Until next time, enjoy this episode from the short-lived NBC series hosted by Bob Eubanks, "Family Secrets." Why this was cancelled is beyond me, I'll tell you what.

All right, everyone. We don't know where or when the next Story City will be, but we do know that the September theme (chosen by you and your money votes at Rent for RANT) is FAMILY SECRETS.

Start thinking. Start scheming. Start figuring out how you will explain to your aunt why the Twin Cities knows her meatloaf recipe.

Email [email protected] a few sentences about your "family secret" story for a chance to grace the Story City stage (wherever that stage will be).
