📍 ONE WEEK OUT. Mark your calendar — you don't want to miss this, and catch it secondhand.

Next Friday, June 19, we open BLACKNIFICENT Vol. 3, Ron Brown's 20-year retrospective — and we're opening it on Juneteenth on purpose.

Here's the thing about Juneteenth: it's not a day to scroll past. It's a day to show up — to be in a room with your people, in front of work that tells the truth about where we've been and where we're going.

That's what this is. Twenty years of Ron's vision across canvas, hand-crafted furniture, and wearable art — a sacred Black living room, a love letter to hip-hop, a conversation with the ancestors. Hip-hop and jazz moving through the room. Real art. Real community. Real history, made present.

You can read about it later. Or you can be there when it opens. 🖤

EXHIBTION OPENING AND JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION —
BLACKNIFICENT Vol. 3

TWO WEEKS away. If you haven't locked this in yet on your calendar — now's the time.

Friday, June 19 | Juneteenth | 5–9 pm
ArT @ 967 Payne | 967 Payne Ave, St. Paul

Juneteenth is a day that calls us toward freedom — not as abstraction, but as lived practice. It asks us to gather, to speak truth, and to celebrate who we are and what we are building next.

There is no better place to do that than in the presence of Ron Brown's work.

Blacknificent Vol. 3 is a 20-year retrospective spanning canvas, hand-crafted furniture, and wearable art — Afrocentric, hip-hop–infused, and unapologetic. Three immersive chapters move through a sacred Black living room, a visual love letter to hip-hop culture, and a spiritual communion with ancestral wisdom. Together they ask the question that Juneteenth itself demands:

"If we know who we are… what are we going to build next?"

This is not ceremony. This is not performance. This is the real thing — community, truth, and twenty years of creative vision that refuses apology and honors where we come from.

Spend Juneteenth the way it was meant to be spent. 🖤

Twenty years of Afrocentric vision, hip-hop truth, and ancestral fire — arriving exactly when it should.

Juneteenth is a summons. A summons to gather, to speak truth, and to celebrate who we are and what we are building next.

This June 19, answer that summons at the opening of BLACKNIFICENT Vol. 3 — a 20-year retrospective by Ron Brown that is, in every sense, the real thing.

Three immersive chapters move through a sacred Black living room, a visual love letter to hip-hop culture, and a spiritual communion with the ancestors. The work is unapologetic, deeply rooted, and alive with the question Juneteenth itself demands:

"If we know who we are… what are we going to build next?"

Come experience it in community. In truth. In celebration of who we are and where we are going. That's what Juneteenth was meant to feel like. 🖤✊🏾

This is not just an art show. This is a reckoning. A celebration. A homecoming.

Three immersive chapters. One unapologetic journey:

🛋️ The Living Room — sacred space, hand-crafted furniture, culture as resistance

🎤 I Used 2 Love H.E.R. — a visual love letter to hip-hop as philosophy, survival & poetry

🌍 Conversations with Wisdom — ancestral symbolism meets afrofuturism in spiritual communion

Hip-hop provides the language. Jazz provides the improvisation. The art provides the evidence.

"If we know who we are… What are we going to build next?"

Come spend Juneteenth the way it was meant to be spent — in community, in truth, in celebration of who we are and where we're going. This one matters. Don't miss it.

🎨 THIS FRIDAY! Come celebrate the opening reception of NATURE'S BORDERS, a stunning new collection of paintings by Rebecca Wynia (rebeccawyniaart) — on view at ArT @ 967 Payne in St. Paul.

📅 Friday, May 15 | 5–9 pm
📍 967 Payne Ave, St. Paul

Forecast: 85° and not a cloud in sight. ☀️ Minnesota is giving us a gift this Friday — so why not spend some of that golden evening soaking in beautiful, meaningful art?

While the Art-a-Whirl crowds are busy bumping elbows and circling the block for the third time, you could be sipping wine in a serene gallery, discovering work that encourages you to learn something about yourself. Just saying. 😄

And did we mention FREE PARKING? Yes. Free. Park. Ing. 🙌

Rebecca's paintings move between landscapes of Minnesota and Mexico — sky, earth, light, and longing — rendered in rich acrylics and gouache that feel both intimate and expansive. This is a show you won't want to miss.

Come for the art. Stay for the evening. Bring a friend.

🎨 Congratulations to our own Resident Artist, Steve Smith! 🎨

We are so proud to share that Steve has been selected to be one of the featured artists in the upcoming exhibitions at the Phipps Center for the Arts in Hudson, WI — running May 15 through July 12. Fifteen of Steve's compelling paintings will be on display, alongside exhibitions by Suyao Tian, Jennifer Scammahorn, Katharine Eksuzian, Michelle Westmark Wingard, Susan Bourgerie and Jane Stern, and Tropical Wings.

In Steve's own words:

"My art reflects seeing through my mother's eyes... My artwork reflects a relationship between the elements and entities of this earth and is my way of honoring the teachings Mother gave. The intention of my artwork is a call to preserve the natural world, the sacred places and the ancient ways of the Indigenous Nations."

The Opening Reception is Friday, May 15, 6:30–8:30 p.m. — and yes, we know — that's the same evening as the opening of Rebecca Wynia's solo show 'Nature's Borders' right here at ArT @ 967 Payne! We sincerely apologize for the scheduling conflict, but here's the good news: you can do both! 🙌

✨ Stop by ArT @ 967 Payne first — we open at 5 pm — then head out to Hudson for Steve's reception. Or catch Rebecca's show on your way back, as we'll be open until 9 pm.

Two incredible openings, one unforgettable evening. We hope to see you at both!

🌿 Opening This Friday — Nature's Borders | Rebecca Wynia Solo Exhibition

The opening reception is almost here, and we could not be more excited to share this one with you!

Join us this Friday, May 15, from 5 to 9 pm for the opening of Nature's Borders, a solo exhibition by Minnesota-based artist Rebecca Wynia at ArT @ 967 Payne.

rebeccawyniaart

Rebecca describes this body of work as an exploration of how our concept of home shapes us — and of the perimeters, imposed or natural, that define the world around us. Working on raw canvas, she lets paint move organically, allowing edges to blend, colors to meld, and textures to form on their own terms. Then she asks: what happens when other borders — deliberate lines — are laid across those living, breathing shapes? At times recognizable landscapes emerge. At others, the work stays in nature's own loose and elemental form.

It's painting that invites you to slow down, look closely, and feel the tension between what grows freely and what gets defined.

Rebecca's work is deeply rooted in personal experience — years living abroad across Mexico and Switzerland, navigating immigration, and ultimately returning to the woods and lakes of Minnesota. That biography quietly hums beneath every canvas.

OPENING IN TWO WEEKS – May 15, 5-9 pm

‘NATURE’S BORDERS’ - A solo exhibition of vibrant new paintings by Rebecca Wynia | rebeccawyniaart, exploring the boundaries—both imposed and organic—that shape the environment each of us lives in.

https://www.mplsart.com/events/nature-s-borders-rebecca-wynia

In the artist’s own words: “How does our concept of home shape us? What perimeters, imposed or natural, exist to define the world around us? This body of work seeks to explore nature's own borders, where edges blend, colors meld and textures form as the paint interacts on a raw canvas, and what happens when other borders, or lines, are imposed upon these organic shapes to define something new. At times visible landscapes form, and others seek to express nature in its own loose and organic form?”

Wynia’s artistic vision is shaped by her experiences guiding a multilingual and multicultural family, as well as her journey through the challenges of immigration, reflecting a life lived across borders—from Mexico to Switzerland to Minnesota. For Wynia, nature stands as the enduring “home,” offering stability and comfort throughout life’s transitions. Her paintings evoke memories of these places, bringing a sense of tranquility and grounding even as everything around her changes.

Join us to meet Rebecca Wynia, immerse yourself into her unique experience through her newest collection, and take a moment to contemplate your own path to belonging.
