In 2015, Saint Paul's beloved literary event, Soap Boxing Poetry Slam, teamed up with Minnesota’s own Button Poetry, the largest digital distributor of spoken word in the world. With the assistance of the Knight Foundation, Button Poetry Live is a monthly poetry slam competition that features nationally renowned poets and local talent, as well as free writing workshops open to the public. Doors at 7pm. A quick note about the poetry slam at Button Poetry Live:

We believe that our show is best when it is balanced and engaging. In order to help accomplish this, for each show, we work to place both experienced and new poets up on our stage with a draw. Additionally, to accommodate folks with disabilities or mobility issues who may have trouble getting to a show, or folks who are coming from out of town, we give special consideration to them, including pre-reserved spots in the draw. If you are interested in competing in a slam and one of those applies to you, please reach out to Sarah at [email protected] at least one week prior to the show. For general sign-up, please show up no later than 7:45 PM the day of the show to get your name on the draw list.

LAST CALL - The Minnesota Humanities Center is seeking poetry submissions from Minnesotan teen writers (age 13-19) reflecting on the themes of America’s 250th Anniversary.

All accepted work will be published in Voices Forward, a chapbook that invites young writers to imagine futures for themselves, their communities, and the nation—in their own words! Submit your work by Friday, August 7.

Contributors will receive a $100 honorarium, feedback on their work from working Minnesota poets, and copies of the published chapbook. Poets will also be invited to read their work at a showcase at the Bell Museum in St. Paul on August 20 (presence is not required for publication).
