We’re thrilled to spotlight visual artist Steve Smith | .owl.art and his stunning piece “Mother Earths Garden” at SOLIDARITY STREET GALLERY 2025! Deeply inspired by creation stories honoring women and the vital role of our non-human relatives, Steve’s painting weaves together birds, dragonflies, and sacred symbols—each chosen for their rich meaning and personal significance. His vibrant work celebrates resilience, hope, beauty, and the spirit of protection, drawing from traditions and family connections.

Steve’s art is all about connection—bridging cultures, memories, and shared spirit in every brushstroke. With roots in both artistic training and ancestral wisdom, he creates pieces that invite us to reflect, remember, and feel the unity that binds us all. We’re grateful for Steve’s dedication, not only in sharing his artwork, but also for serving on our Artistic Advisory Board and helping select this year’s gallery highlights through the Public Call for Art. Thank you, Steve, for inspiring us to honor and care for all life!

We are most grateful to interdisciplinary visual artist Ka Moua for sharing her stunning works at SOLIDARITY STREET GALLERY 2025 - and for
her invaluable contributions to planning and staging the exhibition and cultural celebration along Payne Avenue, which took place Oct
10-12.

Ka’s pieces bring awareness to our inherent connectedness—reminding us of the symbiotic relationships that thrive quietly between objects,
people, and words, even as modern distractions challenge our sense of unity. Her art beautifully evokes the natural beauty in life’s simplest moments.

Ka Moua, a Studio Art graduate with a philosophy minor from UW-Stout, explores abstract imagery through innovative techniques and materials,
drawing inspiration from religious studies, naturalism, and humanism. Her work examines the world with a philosopher’s eye, highlighting the
complex ties between nature, technology, ritual, and human relationships.

Ka Moua also serves as the Gallery and Outreach coordinator at East Side Arts Council, our partner in fiscal sponsor for SOLIDARITY STREET
GALLERY 2025. We are especially grateful for Ka’s dedication behind the scenes—jurying artworks, guiding exhibition layout and
installation, helping to select performers, and even coordinating the food truck. The exhibition will be on display through November 2 and
can be viewed by appointment.

Thank you, Ka, for helping turn our vision into reality!

We are deeply grateful to the East Side Funders Group for their generous support of SOLIDARITY STREET GALLERY 2025, made possible through their East Side Opportunity Fund. Their funding provided a critical foundation for our ability to host an exciting and meaningful program of live music and spoken word readings on all three days of our celebration (Oct 10-12). Thanks to their support, we were also able to cover many essential operating expenses, helping us bring this vibrant and inclusive event to life for our community.

The East Side Funders Group is dedicated to uplifting the East Side of Saint Paul by investing in local organizations and initiatives that drive economic growth and opportunity. Their work fosters economic development and job creation, empowering residents and supporting a thriving, resilient community. We, the organizing team of Solidarity Street Gallery, and the East Side Arts Council as our non-profit partner and fiscal sponsor, are honored to join forces with an organization so committed to making a positive impact and building a brighter future for the East Side.

The Solidarity Street Gallery 2025 exhibition opened this past weekend, October 10-12, as part of an inspiring celebration along Payne Avenue—and we’re thrilled to share that the show will continue on display through November 2 and can be viewed by appointment.

Included in the exhibition is the work of visual artist Ari Duke | : her reduction relief prints confront the seemingly impossible balance between living fully and making a living in a capitalist world. Ari’s series presents familiar symbols—a traffic cone, a clock, and a dollar—transformed into impossible shapes, exposing how everyday structures of labor, time, and economy become unsolvable puzzles and reflect the contradictions we face in daily life.

Ari Duke is a multimedia artist and printmaker based in Saint Paul, Minnesota, originally from New York. Art has always grounded her through times of change and reinvention. Her practice, influenced by Andy Warhol’s bold iconography and M.C. Escher’s visual paradoxes, is rooted in the methodical discipline she honed under the mentorship of Amy Sands | . Ari’s work continues to push boundaries, making visible the struggle for balance in a system designed to keep it out of reach. Ari is a resident artist at ArT @ 967 Payne .

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Ari for her major role on the organizing team for Solidarity Street Gallery 2025, especially for creating many of our social media posts and skillfully handling media interactions. Her creative vision and dedication have been instrumental in making this event a success!

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Keith Tolar
Keith’s photography captures everyday resilience—the quiet strength people show as they move through their lives. His images invite viewers to pause and look inward, sparking reflection on endurance, connection, and the beauty found in ordinary moments. Through his lens, Keith celebrates the human capacity to adapt, persist, and find meaning in daily experience.

A lifelong photographer and educator, Keith has exhibited at The Dow Gallery, Praxis Photography Center, and during the St. Paul Art Crawl. His work has also been featured through the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Inspired by other artists, feedback from audiences, and the world around him, he continues to create photographs that inspire dialogue and self-discovery.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Moira Villiard
Moira’s painting Strength to Rest reflects on the universal need for safety, rest, and dignity—rights every child deserves, yet not all are granted. Created as part of her Rights of the Child series, the piece centers on her husband as a child and evokes both tenderness and resilience. Through it, Moira invites viewers to consider how belonging is tied to care, justice, and our shared responsibility to one another.

A multidisciplinary artist and community organizer from the Fond du Lac Reservation, and a direct descendant of the Fond du Lac Band of Ojibwe, Moira creates work grounded in storytelling and community. Her practice spans painting, murals, digital media, and projection art, often centered on public participation and shared experience. Through her art, she continues to uplift underrepresented voices and build spaces for reflection, healing, and connection.
