Someone commented on my last chalk post that they had no idea that I actually chalk on the sidewalk!! They thought it was some kind of digital drawing that I alter to make it look like sidewalk chalk. This totally blew my mind since my account started by featuring my chalk art 🤯 So I decided to share a bit about my chalking process:
Anytime you see chalking on my account, it is done outside on the sidewalk with basic sidewalk chalk. I actually don’t like Crayola chalk! Basic no-name sidewalk chalk is my jam! I use a method where I submerge the chalk in water for about 30 seconds which then alters the viscosity to be a bit more like paint.
This process allows me to manipulate the chalk more so than I could if it was dry. It also causes the chalk to stay more pristine on the sidewalk for longer. But, it comes off with water just like dry chalk would. I do it all by hand; I do not use any tools aside from my fingers.
I usually chalk on the same square right outside of my house. Sometimes I will go to a public place to chalk or to someone’s home/event for a commission. I love chalking in my neighborhood and creating art for my community. I was featured on the local news in 2022 for my chalk art. That was really cool 😎

I live in Minnesota, so I can only chalk about six months out of the year. On the rare chance that we have a sunny day where there’s no snow on the sidewalk, I will chalk. But, snow doesn’t wash away chalk like rain does, and I obviously can’t hose it down in the middle of winter 🤦🏻♀️
