No pictures allowed, but this was a spectacular concert of American music, past and present, curated by conductor Jonathan Heyward. Billy Childs was present to hear the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra premiere his exciting Concerto for Flute and Clarinet. "A More Perfect Union" and Salvant brought down the house with unique arrangements of songs from Billie Holiday, Sondheim, Paul Simon and Leonard Bernstein. The BSO's performance under Heyward's baton of Copland was nothing short of electrifying. An evening to remember...

Our ED is in Baltimore at the League of American Orchestras conference. A beautiful city and the opening ceremonies at Meyerhoff Hall featured not one, not two, but three fabulous youth orchestras! They rocked the house! Tomorrow evening a performance of the renowned Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.

We know that many classical music lovers are also very into the jazz scene (and vice versa) - a reason why this upcoming season we will once again feature a jazz chamber concert in January 2027. So today we celebrate the birthday of one of the jazz greats of the 20th century - Miles Davis born May 26, 1926. Davis' influence extends beyond jazz to rock, and some may say to the jazz idioms of classical composers. Fearlessly creative, his innovations helped shape several major jazz styles, including bebop, cool jazz, hard bop, modal jazz, and jazz fusion. Davis was a consumate trumpet player, known for a trumpet style that was understated, emotional, and instantly recognizable. Rather than relying on flashy technique or rapid-fire notes, Davis favored space, nuance, and tone. His landmark albums including "Kind of Blue" transformed modern music and secured his place a one of the towering musical figures of the last century.
