Don't forget to head to the Missouri Theater this Sunday, May 17, with a special screening of the silent film “IT” starring Clara Bow at 3pm. This event celebrates...a little early...the Missouri Theater turning 100 in 2027. Tickets can be purchased at https://jomotickets.com/.../it-screening-starring-clara-bow.

Organ accompanist, Marvin Faulwell and percussionist, Bob Keckeisen will provide the live soundtrack for the afternoon. The two are regular musicians at the Kansas Silent Film Festival in Topeka. Mr. Faulwell composed the music that they will be playing for “IT.”

When the Missouri Theater opened on June 25, 1927, the feature film was “Rough House Rosie” starring Clara Bow. That particular film has been lost, but the movie, “IT” was also made in 1927 and established Bow as the original IT girl. She was Hollywood’s most popular leading lady of the late 1920s.

The opening act for the afternoon will be a musical routine called “The Ragtime Revelers” from the Dance Arts Center. This is an homage to the Vaudeville acts and variety shows that graced the stage of this movie palace from its inception.

A Charlie Chaplin short, “The Adventurer” will precede the feature film. Following a brief intermission, the documentary, “Discovering the IT Girl” narrated by Courtney Love will be shown. The event will finish by 5:40pm.

Co-sponsors of this silent film afternoon are Performing Arts Association and the City of St Joseph. Thanks to Bill Shaffer, President of the KS Silent Film Festival, for his connections and support.

This program is presented in cooperation with the Centennial Celebration Series (CCS) in anticipation of the 100th Anniversary of City Hall and the Missouri Theater in 2027 and organized by the CCS Committee of The Friends of the Missouri Theater. For more information, email [email protected] or phone Committee Chair, Lori McAlister at 402-802-2099.
