What happens when you frame the view? 👀🌿

Over the weekend, students from our East Asian Gardens class visited the East Asian Gardens in St. Paul and put a hands-on concept into practice. Using some very rustic “view framers,” students isolated individual views from the surrounding visual “noise” to identify moments of beauty, balance and composition.

The activity mirrors one of the functions of architecture in a traditional Chinese garden—carefully framing and directing the viewer’s experience of the landscape.

In other words: sometimes, seeing art is all about knowing where to look. 🏯🌿

Fall sunshine makes the perfect studio. ☀️🍂

Students in Bio-Illustration took their work outdoors, getting a true perspective of the natural world as they observed, sketched, and captured the details around them.

Professor Rachel Melis shares her insights as students work, refine their observations, and see their subjects from a whole new perspective. Because sometimes, the best classroom has no walls. 🌿✏️

🎨 Learning from the Artist Behind the Work!

Our painting students recently had the opportunity to hear from visiting artist Michael Kareken and got an inside look at his creative process, practice, and approach to painting. What better way to learn than from an artist whose work is right here on campus? 👏

Michael’s work is currently on display in the Gallery at SJU Art Center, giving our students the chance to connect what they’re learning in the classroom with artwork in an exhibition setting.

Our Introduction to Photography students are taking photography beyond the camera with cyanotypes—using light, objects, and experimentation to create these incredible blue-and-white images! 📸✨

Every piece is a little different, and that’s part of the fun. From experimenting with composition to watching the light reveal their designs, our students are learning that photography is all about seeing, creating, and exploring.

Meet Ellie—future curator, art lover, and one of our amazing senior Art majors! 🎓🖼️

With a love for Museum Studies, Ellie has her sights set on a career in curation, with the dream of working at the Minneapolis Institute of Art .

She found a favorite in Rachel Melis’ Printmaking class, while pastels and charcoal are among her favorite ways to create.

One of her most memorable CSB+SJU experiences was her collaborative summer undergraduate research project with Dr. Carol Brash, where she got hands-on experience in curating —and made some great friends along the way!

Next stop: graduate school at the University of St. Thomas to continue her Museum Studies journey. 🎨✨

What happens when you let the land become part of the work? 🌿🎨

We loved celebrating senior art major Sophie Pennings and Professor Elaine Rutherford as they shared their summer research and the art that grew from their connection to place.

A beautiful exhibition that allowed our student artist to have the opportunity to turn those connections into something meaningful.

On display in the BAC Gallery Lounge until September 30.
