Watercolor on paper.
Inscribed ‘1784’.
13” x 8 1/4” sheet.

First Great Study of Natural History in the Indies

The Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam now holds many of the Brandes watercolors, and thus this represents a rare opportunity to acquire works by this particular artist.

The spirit of the Dutch Age of Enlightenment is embodied in the figure of Jan Brandes, a Lutheran minister who was employed by the Dutch East India Company (VOC). In Jonathan Israel’s 1995 publication, The Dutch Republic the author described the Enlightenment as “a shift to toleration, secularization, classification of knowledge, and popularization.” Protestantism, particularly that worshipped by the Lutheran Church, abhorred idolaterism. This was reflected in the secularization of the arts and, thus, the popularization of landscape and still life painting. Jan Brandes was a product of this philosophy and created a valuable collection of drawings of the VOC’s settlements in Java, South Africa and Sri Lanka.

Edward Lear (1812-1888).
Psittacula Kuhlii. Kuhl’s Parakeet.
From: Illustrations of the Family of Psittacidae, or Parrots. London, 1830-1832.

Lithographs with original hand-coloring Sheet size: 21 X 14.50" Edward Lear's Illustrations of the Family of Psittacidae, or Parrots, a total of 42 hand- colored lithographed plates, was issued in a limited edicion of 175 copies between 1830 and 1832. Working in the zoological gardens in Regent's Park in London, Lear was the first to draw his birds from life. Lear’s publication was innovative in several significant ways. Unlike previous bird artists, he drew whenever possible from life rather than stuffed specimens, thus combining anatomical accuracy and subtlety of detail with the pose and expression of the living, moving bird. Lear also employed the relatively new medium of lithography which, by dispensing with the need for professional engravers, allowed him to retain complete artistic control over all stages of his work. This, the first large-folio bird book completed in England, and the only separate ornithological work produced by Lear, marked an important turning point in the history of natural history illustration, ushering in the transition from engraving to lithography as the preferred medium.
