MN MADE SHORT FILMS

One of the biggest strengths of the St Cloud Film Fest over the years has been the quality of local submissions we get. Programmer and Festival Judge Sarah Steinfeldt has put together a collection of some of her favorite films from Minnesota and has put together a great show.

This is a very strong group of films and you will only find out what is being screened when you show up!

The films will be screening on Friday, January 31st, 7PM at The Black Box Theatre (804 W Saint Germain Street, St Cloud, MN, 56301).

This is a FREE show.

“This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Central MN Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.”

THE CAVE
(dir. Feras Fayyad, Syria)

Oscar nominee Feras Fayyad (Last Men in Aleppo) delivers an unflinching story of the Syrian war with this powerful documentary. For besieged civilians, hope and safety lie underground inside the subterranean hospital known as the Cave, where pediatrician and managing physician Dr. Amani Ballour and her colleagues have claimed their right to work as equals alongside their male counterparts, doing their jobs in a way that would be unthinkable in the oppressively patriarchal culture that exists above. Following the women as they contend with daily bombardments, chronic supply shortages and the ever-present threat of chemical attacks, The Cave paints a stirring portrait of courage, resilience and female solidarity.

THE CAVE screens at 7PM on Saturday November 9th in The Black Box Theatre. This is an incredible story that everyone should see.

SOMETIMES, I THINK ABOUT DYING
[dir. Stefanie Abel Horowitz, USA]

Fran is thinking about dying, but a man in the office might want to date her.

Stefanie Abel Horowitz directed theater for a decade before pivoting to film. Her first short film, Up North, premiered on Short of the Week in 2017. Her second short film, sometimes, i think about dying, premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival.

This film screens as part of our Stories About Women program on Wednesday, 6th, 7PM at The Black Box. The whole show is fantastic.

THE CHRISTMAS GIFT
[dir. Bogdan Muresanu, Romania]

On the 20th of December, 1989, a few days after Ceausescu's bloody repression in Timisoara, a father’s quiet evening turns to sheer ordeal as he finds out that his little son has mailed a wish letter to Santa. As the kid understood, his father’s desire was to see Ceausescu dead.

This short screens on Monday, November 4th, 7PM at The Black Box. All of the shorts during this program are great - don't miss them!

CARLOTTA'S FACE
[dir. Valentin Riedl and Frédéric Schuld, Germany]

As a child, Carlotta didn’t expect the people around here to have faces. She even doesn’t recognize her own face. Years later, she learns about a rare, untreatable deficit of her brain. It was art, after all, that offered her a way to finally recognize herself.

This film screens during our Family Program on Sunday, November 3rd, 1PM at The Black Box Theatre. It is a FREE show and appropriate for all-ages.

BURQA CITY
[dir. Fabrice Bracq, France]

Souleymane and Leila just got married, for better or for worse. The better is that they love each other very much. The worse is that they live in an absurd and kafkaesque country.

This is an incredible short that screens on Friday, November 8th, 7PM at SCSU's Miller Center Auditorium as part of our Middle Eastern Shorts program.

This is a FREE show.

INK ODE
[dir. Colin Stanhill, MN]

Slapstick psychedelia meets analog glitch film in a love poem to the blotty, bleedy, supersaturated splendor of ink on paper. Ever-morphing imagery crackles with artifacts and oddments that recall the unique textures of film reels, video tapes, and digital files. Created entirely with brushed ink on 35mm paper.

Colin has screened multiple films at the St Cloud Film Fest plus he designed the artwork and trailer for the 2019 Melbourne International Animation Festival.

INK ODE will screen on Saturday, November 9th, 1PM at The Black Box Theatre.
