Bet you didn’t know Memorial Day has Black roots long before the government made it official.

In 1865, formerly enslaved Black Americans in Charleston honored more than 250 Union soldiers who died in a Confederate prison camp. They gave them proper burials, decorated their graves with flowers, and held a remembrance ceremony celebrating freedom, sacrifice, and dignity.

Their story deserves to be remembered.

From powerful advice and words of encouragement to celebrating excellence and achievement, the BSU was proud to be a part of the West Augustine Heritage Festival award ceremony.

Congratulations to Heaven Ferguson, R’Leah Williams, and Braden Durdin for being recognized with the Improvement, Enhancement, and Encouragement Cultural Award. We are also incredibly honored that the BSU of St. Augustine High School received an award as well.

These recognitions reflect the hard work, leadership, service, and positive impact our students continue to make throughout the school and community. Thank you to the CRA and everyone involved for supporting and uplifting our youth.

The CRA recognized BSU members Heaven Ferguson and R’Leaha Williams, along with senior Braden Durdin, with the Improvement, Enhancement, and Encouragement Cultural Award at the West Augustine Heritage Festival.

We are incredibly proud of these students for representing the BSU and St. Augustine High School with leadership, positivity, service, and dedication to our community. Their hard work and commitment continue to inspire those around them and reflect the mission and values of our organization.

The BSU of St. Augustine High School is truly honored, humbled, and proud to be a recipient of the West Augustine Heritage Festival Empowerment, Enhancement, and Encouragement Cultural Award.

This recognition reflects the hard work, dedication, and positive impact of our students throughout the school year. From promoting unity through our Better Words Better World campaign to celebrating culture, leadership, education, and community service, our BSU continues to strive to make a difference both inside and outside the school walls.

We would like to sincerely thank the CRA and the West Augustine Heritage Festival for this meaningful honor and for continuing to invest in and uplift our youth and community. We are grateful for the support and encouragement as we continue to lead, inspire, and create positive change.

Today we celebrate all mothers, grandmothers, aunties, mentors, and mother figures whose love, wisdom, sacrifice, and strength help guide generations forward. Thank you for the encouragement you give, the lessons you teach, and the unconditional love you show every day.
