Florida Before Flagler: Photographs by Hugo Meyer is now on view. Featured in the exhibition is this 1870s photograph of St. Augustine’s historic lighthouse.

The St. Augustine lighthouse stands on a site with a long history of maritime watch and navigation. A Spanish watchtower stood here by the late sixteenth century; in 1737, it was replaced by a larger structure of coquina and wood. After the United States acquired Florida, the old tower was converted to a lighthouse in 1824. By the late nineteenth century, shoreline erosion had brought the tower dangerously close to the Atlantic. A new brick lighthouse was constructed farther inland between 1871 and 1874. Meyer’s photograph captures the lighthouse shortly after its completion, when the new tower served both as a vital aid to navigation and as a prominent feature of St. Augustine’s coastal landscape.
