Turning Stone Into Bronze

For sculptor Mark Yale Harris, every work begins with discovery.

Rather than starting with a detailed model or drawing, Harris often begins with a simple block of stone—studying its natural character and slowly carving away the excess until the form within is revealed. Each sculpture is then meticulously sanded and polished, allowing the beauty of the stone itself to become part of the finished work.

And sometimes, the journey continues.

Select sculptures originally carved in stone are transformed once again—cast in bronze, preserving Harris’ distinctive forms in a material made to endure for generations.

There is something almost magical about the transformation: stone to sculpture, sculpture to bronze.

We are excited to welcome several of these cast bronze works to the gallery, including Cupcake, The Way We Are, Butterflies Are Free, Unbearable, and the Little Worries series.

Nearly a decade before The Cat in the Hat became one of the most recognizable characters in children's literature, Dr. Seuss sketched this playful, whimsical clown-like figure—Carefree Ormie.

We're excited to feature two exceptionally rare c. 1900 color lithographs created for the renowned French biscuit company Lefèvre-Utile (LU):
