๐Ÿ ๐ƒ๐ข๐ ๐˜๐จ๐ฎ ๐Š๐ง๐จ๐ฐ: The striking color patterns of milk snakes may remind some of the venomous ๐˜ค๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ญ ๐˜ด๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ฌ๐˜ฆ, which possess highly toxic venom that can cause serious injury or death to humans. Despite their similar appearance, milk snakes, like Leche, are harmless to humans and do not have any venom. Instead, milk snakes use ๐˜ค๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ to subdue their prey! The famous rhyme โ€œIf red touches yellow, youโ€™re a dead fellow; if red touches black, youโ€™re okay, Jack!โ€ can help you remember the difference between a milk snake and a coral snake!

๐Ÿฆ‰ Owls, unlike most bird species, are nearly perfectly silent when in flight. This helps owls catch prey and gives them a distinct advantage amongst other birds of prey, since their prey can't hear them coming. The structure of their feathers works to break up turbulence in the air that would create a swooshing sound. Sounds from smaller streams of air are further decreased by a velvety texture, unique to owl feathers, and by a soft fringe on a wing's trailing edge. Together, these two features streamline the air flow and absorb sound!

๐Ÿฅณ There is a hatchday shellabration going on in the desert habitat of the Wild In Nature Building!!! The lovable and inquisitive Egyptian Tortoise Horus turned 8 years old today! Happy hatchday Horus! ๐Ÿ’š ๐ŸŽ‚

๐Ÿข Egyptian Tortoises are one of the smallest tortoise species in the world, maxing out at just 6 inches long! These little guys though are currently listed as critically endangered. Conservation programsโ€”such as those run by AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums, like oursโ€”are working hard to protect these tortoises through breeding, habitat preservation, and education. Horus is part of that mission, serving as an ambassador to inspire change and spread awareness, and we are very lucky to have her at our Zoo!
